Windows Automotive 5.0 out of the pits Microsoft today unveiled Windows Automotive 5.0, the latest version of its operating system designed for in-vehicle computers running navigation, entertainment and communication systems. Based on the real-time embedded Windows CE 5.0, Windows Automotive 5.0 has been designed to integrate with services offering real-time traffic updates, directions to the cheapest petrol in town, turn-by-turn navigation and more. Windows Automotive 5.0 features enhancements including the Automotive User Interface Toolkit which enables the creation of 3D graphics and advanced navigation displays. The platform's multimedia functions have been boosted with the addition of DirectShow which supports a variety of digital media including Windows Media Audio, MP3 and DVD. | ||

BMW uses Windows CE for their infamous i-drive. Since its debut with the 7-series a few years back I haven't read one positive review of i-drive. Is it a problem with the i-drive design or with Windows CE? Who knows, but a friend with a recent 5-series tells me he often has to reboot the i-drive to get it to respond.
Thankfully BMW is not forcing it down the throat of new 3-series buyers. |

Schwit - don't buy these cars: 2005 Acura, 2004 Mecedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Citroen C5, Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Mirage, Subaru Legacy, Volvo S60, S80, V70, etc., and Toyota WILL Cypha. Latch - take down from the walls in the basement of your mom's house, where you live, pictures of the above cars. My lament is: Where was Microsoft powered technology in the above cars when my kids were young and I heard for the 1000th time, "Are we there, yet?" |

Well I cannot comment about the 7 Series because I only drove one for a week but I have a 5 one and I never had a problem with the I-drive. Before I had a 3 series and again I never had problems with it although the 3 only had navigations and a simpler on-board computer. I would gladly comment on a 7 or better on a 6 series if someone would be so nice to buy me one of those. :-) This post was edited by Fritzly on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 22:02. |

#7: ;) I'm probably older than you are. Besides, I don't want to leave my parent's basement. It's easier to support my wife and two kids when you live rent-free.
Meanwhile an appeals court upheld the decision that MS stole IP from AT&T. Considering all the noise they make about protecting their IP rights, it's just stunning how hypocritical they are.
