AMD Files Antitrust Suit Against Intel | |

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel Corp., accusing its market-dominating competitor of forcing customers into exclusive deals to keep them from buying AMD microprocessors. The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Delaware, alleges Intel has bullied 38 companies, including large-scale computer-makers, wholesale distributors and retailers, to secure a monopoly in the highly competitive x86 microprocessor market. The microprocessors run the Microsoft Windows, Solaris and Linux families of operating systems. Santa Clara-based Intel's current market share of x86 microprocessors is about 80 percent of worldwide sales by unit volume and 90 percent by revenue. | ||

| Me too but at least this time there is real competition as AMD produce far far better processors than Intel do. Really hope this turns out well for AMD, they deserve far more of a marketshare. |

| #2: Intel learned the trick from MS where you keep your only competition barely alive so as to justify how you're NOT a monopoly (only 99.9% market saturation!). Intel could have crushed AMD out of existence long ago if they wanted to. And now it's biting them in the ass as AMD is eating Intel's lunch. Stories like MS using dual Opteron's can't hurt AMD's quest for legitimacy as more than just a budget CPU. |

AMD will surely fail in its antitrust suit against Intel if they are using Latch's definition of a monopoly, ". . . AMD is eating Intel's lunch." lol
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see the so-called ". . . bullied 38 companies" testify against Intel. I wonder how you bully IBM, the largest computer company on the planet? Or HP for that matter? Hmmmm . . . By the way, I used to do some work for a small computer business that used AMD's Athlon line of CPUs. Not a good idea. Within two years of delivering them to customers, they would simply burn out requiring a replacement of both the CPU and motherboard. It appeared that they ran at a higher average tempature than the Intel CPUs. When the CPUs burned out the customer blamed the small business computer owner and he had to replace the components at his expense. Needless to say, he uses Intel CPUs now and refuses to even try the latest offerrings from AMD. The attractive aspect then and now is that AMD CPUs run faster and are cheaper than Intel's CPUs. Nevertheless, the burn out factor may not be that big a deal at the workstation level, but it is a show stopper at the server level. As a large company, we buy x86 servers from both IBM and HP, but have yet to buy their AMD server offerings. AMD will just have to prove itself over time before we use them. |

jdhawk: While yes, the old Athlons did run hotter than their Intel counterparts, you can't just slap any old HSF on to it, and then blame AMD.
Also, the P4 consumes QUITE a bit more power and run hotter than ANYTHING from AMD these days. |

I've built both AMD and Intel machines for my office and both seem to run well. I've had only had one processor burn out, an Intel chip.
I must admit Intel was great at replacing the 8 month old chip with a similar part with one phone call and no hassle. |

I have NEVER personally burned out an AMD based machine. It sounds like the shop you did work for needs to learn proper cooling design. My self-built Win2K3 Server is running on an old ASUS A7V133 System Board with an Athlon 1.2Ghz Processor. It's been up for 5 years 24/7. It has a 20GB Drive, a 30GB Drive, two 40GB Drives, two 80GB Drives. All are 7200 RPM Drives. It's all housed in an Lian-Li PC70 Tower. Actually I just recently retired the 5-6 year old Maxtor 20 and 30GB Drives. I still need to buy a replacement. Other than a Power Outage (and when the UPS runs out) or moving the system to another location in the house, it's never been offline. Don't get me wrong. The AMD scene is not perfect, but it's not AMD that's the problem. It's chipsets. It's better today, especially with nVidia around, but I absolutely, positively DETEST VIA CHIPSETS! TL |
