But then so did IBM at Windows THE MAN behind BitTorrent, Bram Cohen has attacked Microsoft’s attempt to build its own version of the software he designed. Cohen has said that the project, coded named Avalanche that we wrote up last week on the British INQUIRER, was complete garbage and likely to remain vapourous. Snow kidding. "It isn't a product which you can use or test with, it's a bunch of proposed algorithms. There isn't even a fleshed out network protocol. The 'experiments' they've done are simulations," Cohen wrote. | ||

Essentially, Avalanche is Bittorrent + PAR.
For those of you unfamiliar with PAR, it's a very cool way of recovering lost or missing portions of a file based of generic PAR files downloaded along with the main file. For instance, let's say a file has 10 parts and 1 PAR file. No matter which of the 10 parts I'm missing, I can recover it as long as I have enough of the remaining parts plus the PAR file. It's kind of like a super-smart checksum. See: http://www.quickpar.org.uk/index.htm Mr. Cohen's objections seem to be a combination of fear, ego, and a little bit of good old fashion skepticism. In some cases it's almost like he didn't even read their paper. (Like when he suggests Microsoft is missing the security issues inherent in their method, even though they directly address these in their paper.) Microsoft did seem to analyze an old version of bittorrent, but it's very disingenious of Mr. Cohen to first exclaim ignorance on where they possibly could have gotten their information from, and then plainly state that v1.0 of Bittorrent worked exactly that way. At any rate, I can't wait to see how this matures. |

I find it interesting that stories associating BitTorrent with spyware/malware have recently appeared on every page on the net, about the same time as MS announced their competing product, Avalanche. I know (cuz MS says so) that MS is big on innovation and they only compete fairly based on product merit and not lies & dirty tricks, so I'm certain that this isn't an MS disinformation campaign. It's just a coincidence that the BitTorrent/malware story sprung from the blog of an MS employee. And don't fret. Just because MS has a history of slagging competitor's products while announcing that the MS equivalent (due to ship in God knows how many months/years) will be just swell and will blow everything else out of the water, it doesn't mean that it's the same case this time. Really.

There IS a lot of spyware/adware on bittorrent! Just like there is a lot of almost every P2P network.
Why somebody would doubt this, I don't know. Just got to TorrentSpy.com, do a search for a movie or something, and look for all the movie torrents that end in .ZIP or .EXE. The vast majority of those are spyware. Don't believe me? Then feel free to open them. Spyware/adware didn't stop people from using Kazaa, and it won't stop people from using Bittorrent. |

#3: you're missing the point entirely. Nobody is denying that you can get the clap from P2P networks, but the original post tried to insinuate that you'll get infected just by running a BT client. It's like saying that "pedophiles work at MS." With, what, 50,000 employees?, some are bound by the law of averages to be pedophiles but my statement is still misleading. The same law of averages applies everywhere else, so any other company with a similar number of employees is likely to have the same ratio of pedos working for them. However, we won't mention them because it doesn't suit our spin of making MS look like they're chock full of pedo badness, which is untrue. That's the point. MS is trying to demonize BT and make like MS is going to do BT one better, Real Soon Now(tm).
