Windows XP to Reshape Competitive Landscape in Imaging | |

Future Image Inc., the leading publisher of digital imaging information and analysis for business executives, investors, and entrepreneurs, today released ``Windows XP: Challenges and Opportunities for Imaging Companies,'' a report analyzing the impact on the Imaging industry of Microsoft's latest operating system. ``Microsoft has now made digital imaging a full citizen on the PC,'' says Future Image Senior Analyst Paul Worthington, principal author of the report. In doing so Microsoft has potentially given the imaging industry an enormous boost -- but it has also made itself a full player in that industry. Photography is shifting from film to digital, and Microsoft has staked a claim in that emerging market. Imaging companies will require more foresight and fleetness of foot than ever before to leverage the new opportunities at hand -- while simultaneously competing with the Redmond giant.`` | ||

| How is this different from the editing software that Apple has shipped with its OS? What exactly has Microsoft added to WindowsXP that would give even the slightest competition to market leaders such as Macromedia or Adobe? |

Actually when Microsoft bundles products like this, it increases the marketshare for the industry. The reason is that the tools Microsoft bundles are not very good. They are rudimentary and give a person a taste for the concepts, but if you want to do more you need to go buy a better product.
So yes, MS takes up a bit of marketshare, but it is market that otherwise would not have existed and it is a market that as it becomes more in touch with the concepts goes forth and buys the competition product. Basically it's a net win for consumers and competitors. |
