IE7 being developed to resist spyware | |

The next version of Microsoft's much criticized Internet Explorer browser is being built to resist hijacking attempts by spyware and other malicious software, according to a Microsoft developer. Rob Franco, lead program manager for IE Security at Microsoft, wrote in a blog entry on Thursday that Internet Explorer 7 for Longhorn will contain a feature called "low rights IE." The feature essentially removes administrator rights, so that the system will not allow unknown applications, such as spyware and other potentially dangerous code, to be installed without express permission from the user. | ||

| Probably cos your popup settings are on medium, this won't stop the popups which come up due to user interaction. Put it on HIGH and see if that stops it. |

| #4 yeah, that's the thing. HIGH blocks ALL popups. MEDIUM seems to block all the popups that are not user-initiated. These ActiveWin ones seem to only pop-up when you scroll or click something (like a link or on a blank spot on the page) so they count as user-initiated. |

| #1, would you pay a subscription to view the site without adverts? No of course not, no one here would (even if they say they might), how else will a site like this survive. Personally I can't stand them but it's the only way to keep this site going right now. |

| Most of the life of ActiveWin has been done without pop-ups. Only when it has become necessary I implemented them. I might be dropping one of the pop-ups soon because we were able to make it up through google. What about placing 728 x 90's on the top in exchange for a dropped pop-up ad? |

| #9, that is actually a good idea. Blocking those domains will actually stop you from receiving most ads on the Internet.... On the front page here at most at any given time only 2, not 10, popups will come up. I have them blocked. Rarely they come through. |

Anyway... back on topic...
I hate to say it, but spyware already can not be installed, through IE, without user permission. It's the little dialog box that comes up asking you if you want to install the ActiveX control from the website... the same one that everyone that has spyware problems click yes to, thereby giving it permission to install the crap. |

off topic again---does anyone know why the back button on firefox sometimes works on this site and sometimes doesn't. i can't think of another site that seem to do this in firefox.
anyhoo. i still like this site. too bad ms does't read these comments and get off their collective butts and make some cool software again (think google). i know, i know ms is big business and big business thinks that something like xbox360 is cool. sigh. been there done that. |

It's not that you advertise. We understand that. It's the massive advertising that 's a problem. I've NEVER seen so many popups on a site like this. And we continue to get annoyed by the really obnoxious Kill Kahn ad, regardless of many complaints about it. And how about screening your ads a little better. Hosting ads for sites that promote/install Ad/Spyware are not in your best interest when it comes to your relationship wth your readers (i.e. screensavers, the bogus "You may have spyware" ads, etc...). again, you are ignoring the obvious...
PORN ADS Your demographic is obviously young to middle-aged men. The perfect match for some "come hither and dial 1-900" ads. hey olddog, did you see msft's upcoming mapping app? "looks" better than google to me. |
