No Mobile Intel Chip for Longhorn? | |

At Intel's Wireless and Mobility Press Day yesterday, Mooly Eden--vice president and general manager of the company's mobile platforms group--waxed enthusiastic in describing the company's next-gen notebook technology, code-named Napa. (What else would you call the successor to today's Sonoma notebook platform?) Napa's centerpiece: Intel's coming Yonah mobile processor--the company's first dual-core CPU for notebooks. Judging from Eden's lively presentation, Yonah will be a much more integrated dual-core processor than today's Pentium D desktops, which essentially are two single-core chips fused together. You can get the details in this story by Tom Krazit of IDG News Service, but here's what struck me as a bit odd: Unlike the dual-core desktop chips we're seeing now, Yonah will be a 32-bit CPU. Why was I surprised? Intel is saying Napa notebooks will only appear in the first quarter of next year--in other words, only a scant six-to-nine months before the scheduled release of Longhorn, Microsoft's next version of Windows. | ||

How do they come to the conclusion that "Longhorn" 64-bit will be the primary release? Both 32 and 64-bit versions are being simultaneously developed and should be released simultaneously.
Even in 2006, the 32-bit PC market will still be a lot larger than 64-bit. |

| I think I have to disagree with you. A lot of new computers today support 64-bit computing. They are the higher-end computers, albeit, but in that will change in the next 18-24 months. I'll bet all computers (well, at least desktops) will 64-bit capable processors by then, so what's the point in putting a 32-bit OS on it? And the upgrade market won't be as big as the OEM market. |

Not because there is a 64-bit processor inside the majority of PC's sold by the end of this year or next necessarily means it got to come with a 64-bit OS now or next year. With problems plaguing most customers who have migrated to Windows XP x64 concerning hardware drivers and from most companies what seems to be a high level of reluctance to write drivers for the platform faster it still leaves 32 bit Windows with the upper hand.
Even if PC manufacturers preload 64 bit systems with 64-bit Windows, the user will mostly likely format the system and move back to 32-bit Windows or maintain both environments while slowly transitioning to 64 bit Windows over a period of time. Period of time could mean my case, suggest by 2008. |

| Again, I gotta disagree with you... I think the x64 rollout is going to happen a lot quicker than you guys say. Andre, I think you're wrong when you say most people will format and go back to 32-bit. Most people won't care, they'll just want to check their email, surf the web, etc. And most geeks will be excited to have a 64-bit system. I could be wrong, but I think all new systems will be x64 before Longhorn comes out. |

| Isn't it true, though, that 16-bit apps won't run on Longhorn? There are still a surprising number of these around, and even a lot of 32-bit apps have 16-bit installers. I would think that would hold back the adoption of 64-bit machines, particularly in the business market. I hope that comes sooner rather than later, though. |
