IRam Speeds Windows XP Start Up | |

Taiwanese hardware maker Giga-byte Technology has stumbled upon a faster way to boot up PCs based on Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. Giga-byte's IRam is a PC add-in card with four DDR DRAM (double data rate dynamic RAM memory) slots that's designed to be used as a PC drive. Because the IRam uses DRAM rather than a hard disk to store information, data can be retrieved from the drive up to 60 times faster than is possible with a hard drive, according to Giga-byte, which showed the board at the Computex exhibition in Taipei this week. | ||

| This seems like an excellent place to put the page file. Being volatile memory I don't see A DRAM drive being good for much else. |

I think I'll buy one and put a website on it. I wonder what kind of performance a static website would get?
A boot script to copy in from disk and then startup IIS. Also, it would be a great place for 4GB virtual drive for Virtual Server or VMWare if you are using undoable disks for testing. Who cares if you lose it after copying the image from disk. Betcha performance would be sweet. You can get DDR for ~ 80$ for a 1 GB stick. |

I didn't.
System config: Asus P5WD2 moboard, Intel 650 o'clocked to 3.8GHz, 1GB Corsair DDR2 running at DDR/800, WD Raptor drives connected w/ SATA and running stripped. When the system's not busy being used for programming or gaming it also makes a great hair dryer ;-) |

#9, Sweet rig!
I can ditto RH7.3's observations - even our basic systems are fully up in less than 15. Rig's like RH7's can easily beat that and also load the NW Stack. I'm building a new one based upon the 8xx series dual-core EE with HT and the premuim WD2, but going to go nuts and add 4 GB of 1066 and a simple self-contained liquid cooler and push it past 4 GHz. #7, I've left all of our units at work and home on since they were built - some have been running w/o so much as one boot for years [locked down DB servers for example]. One home workstation hasn't been booted since November of last year. [the lesson there is with the right network security one can ignore nearly all threats]. |
