Microsoft adding XML files to Office 12 | |

Microsoft said Thursday that it will introduce new XML-based file formats for its Excel, PowerPoint and Word applications when the company launches its Office 12 software package next year. Company officials said the move to replace Microsoft's traditional binary file formats with open-standards-based XML versions will allow companies using Office 12 to more easily access data across XML's various applications. Microsoft pledged that the shift to XML, also known as Extensible Markup Language, will decrease the size of many individual files and make documents created in its Office products more resistant to corruption. | ||

Same ones as the current Office XML schemas (meaning not many).

| #2: If I remember right, to placate Mass's definition of Open, they had to crack the lid on the schemas, but put in the hook that you were only allowed to read MS XML in a non-MS app if it was a government document. |

I don't really see how that's enforceable. There's no standard metadata to say "this is a gov. document, you can parse this". This is meant to be used w/ standard XML parsers and doc management systems just like the previous formats. This post was edited by n4cer on Thursday, June 02, 2005 at 19:56. |

#4: Thanks, that pretty much spells it out then. It's good to see them actually embrace something without trying to pervert it for their own ends.
#5: yes, it was stupid but they did it. I suspect that their intent was to prevent ANY open source project from writing MS XML. You could read it (only if it was a gov doc) with open source, but not write. You must use an MS app to write MS XML. However, what they've just appeared to have done is a complete 180 from their earlier position. I'm very happy about that and MS deserves kudos for their effort. I just hope there isn't a nasty surprise hidden below the surface somehow. I know you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but MS has too much bad history to ignore.
