Intel, Novell say Linux gains on Microsoft Brazil | |

Intel and Novell on Monday said Linux is gaining on Microsoft's Windows operating system in Brazil thanks to government policies pushing open source software. "More and more you will hear about free software, Linux, principally in the government and corporate environments, and less about Windows," Oscar Clarke, head of Intel in Brazil, said at a press conference. "It's an inexorable trend." Encouraged by what it sees as fertile ground for the spread of free software in the country, Novell released on Monday a new package of Linux-based programs for desktop computers called Novell Linux Desktop in Brazil. | ||

The envoy, Asma Jahangir, said that the state of human rights in Brazil could not be compared with other countries. "In Congo there's a war," she said. "Brazil is a democracy. But what I see here is a wretched, sad situation where there is no justice." " "Human rights groups in Brazil say many killings are carried out by death squads made up of police officers and vigilantes. Unofficial figures compiled by these groups indicate that in 1999, almost 14,000 people were killed by police or death squads." |

#6: If you're an American, don't go there. Either that or I can dig up the UN report on how many innocent Afghans died due to over-exhuberant cluster bombing. Or how many innocent Iraqis died, or how many innocents died in (fill in name of country where U.S. meddles here) due to U.S. action? Then maybe we can talk about mass murderers and death squads. Now I'm not looking to get the rednecks all a'twitch, but people who live in glass houses...

Another *nix pronouncement with a "choice!" lol
Now, does anyone want to bet how long the government of Brazil will take to port over from Windows to *nix? Let's see, we just happen to have a pitiful gage of this type of endeveavor - the municipal government of Munich. Remember them? They started "studying" their port back in the spring of 2003 (with nearly all of tech media trumpeting, ad naseum, their eminent triumph). Two years later, as posted on this web site, we learn that by the end of this year they will start testing. Hold on to your whatever - this is simply blinding! And by the way, what is this Intel salesman getting all worked up about? I guess selling the cheapest possible hardware, as proposed by Brazil for its poor, is going to fatten Intel's wallet? That's a good one! No duel core for you - PLONK. |
