The chief executives of Microsoft and Red Hat have held a private meeting in New York - an indication that relations between the rivals might be warming. Microsoft's Steve Ballmer and Red Hat's Matthew Szulik met for more than an hour at a McCormick and Schmick's restaurant in New York in late March, sources familiar with the situation said. Microsoft initiated the meeting, one source indicated. Red Hat declined to comment for this story. But Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, although not commenting on the Ballmer-Szulik get-together, said in an interview that Microsoft is interested in meeting with open source companies. | ||

They are probably trying to push some type of DRM (copy protection) on them. If they can get the open source community to use/support it then they can control the audio/video encryption technology.

RedHat: This is embarrassing. But we need your help. Too many security holes in too short a time. Did you guys really take a year off and dedicate 1000's of programmers to security? Got any hints how we can do that with those open source guys who refuse to work on anything that is "boring"?

With Revenue and income flat, their stock price cut in half in less than a year, their debt going from almost nothing to $600 million dollars, and the number of shares outstanding up 30% in the same period, the exec at Red Hat really is looking for free meal even from the archrival Microsoft CEO! lol
Let's see the yearly service on $600 million dollars at a conservative 4% is only $24 million dollars. Oh, wait. That's more than a half year of income at Red Hat! In other words, instead of earning 30 cents per share in 2005, they will be lucky to earn half that. No wonder Matthew is willing to dine with just about anybody for a free meal! lol |

Well, OK, #9. The picture is actually worse than I depicted above. Here is RHAT's cash flow quarterlies for the last year: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/cf?s=RHAT. Tell us your take on what is driving revenue and income at RHAT?
Note that across the four quarters Total Cash Flow From Operating Activities is flat. All the activity is coming from the bottom 2/3 of the Cash Flow statement. In other words, their revenue and income is largely the result of financing through borrowing and stock sales NOT sale of product. PLONK |

Actually, #11, it happened a year ago when RHAT borrowed $600 million dollars in a bond issue as mentioned here: http://www.forbes.com/facesinthenews/2005/05/10/0510autofacescan10.html?partner=yahootix&referrer= .
What I didn't highlight in post #10 is a more detailed look at the internals of the Quarlerly Cash Flow statement. Here, you really get an eye full. RHAT borrowed a huge amount of cash in the form of bonds, but what did they do with it? Upon closer examination - next to nothing as highlighted by Capital Expenditures in the statement. Well, they bought back stock with some of the money as per this area of the Cash Flow statement - Sale Purchase of Stock. Yet, at the same time the number of shares available to the market steadily rose. How can that be? Well, while they bought back shares of their own stock as an investment, at the same time they rewarded themselves a boat load of stock - more than offsetting the buy back. To recap: they borrowed massively (which will hurt EPS ongoing) and didn't have a plan - except to reward themselves. Mangement without a clue except to enrich themselves - well, that is a plan, sort of . . . And, then there is Microsoft's plan as outlined by the original article posted here at Activewin: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4516269.stm - quite a difference! | Dell and Microsoft plan to purchase RedHat and shut it down. The only question is how much money the RedHat executives take away from the deal. |

Perhaps not as revealing as mandatory financial reporting...but over the past two years, we've worked with a client and their devs who use RH on Dell hardware.
While not at all scientific, one can see a sincere interest on Dell's side in RH. I say this because of the the evolution that I personally witnessed in the offering - specialized RH AS releases bundled with Dell's 6600 series servers. The first box came with a much less evolved suite of server and management SW. Two years later it was like day -v night, where clearly, Dell and RH had been very busy. Same drill, loaded Dell 6600, but this time the [very costly], RH server and management bundle was very evolved and was clearly developed with Dell. It was/is far better and certainly far easier to manage. I and the devs, especially DB Admins, were very impressed. That said, the price [per year] for basic updates and access to required packages is nuts - > 3500.00/year Finally, same hardware, same database and same volume of transactions using W2K3 Server "smacked down" in both performance and price, the Dell/RH offering - it was just sick in fact...Windows just beat the tar [no pun] out of it and with SP1, it's even worse. I can only imagine what x64 W2K3 and x64 version of MS SQL 2005 will do... I could/can clearly see where Dell has invested enormous energy in RH - but open it sure is not. Now, setting all sports team like fervor aside, I'd bet the two men had a face to face coming on the heels of a lot of calls/emails that reflected a much more mature posture where MS and RH and Dell are all interested in exploring how they can work together to make better software and interoperate in entirely new ways. For MS, I'd bet working with another "COMMERCIAL" SW house like RH, is simply wise...it reinforces the very real truth in the strength of governance present in commercial SW. Working with RH, Suse, Debian, and other distros each day, and all of their devs [who by the way are really kind of stuck and would love to have the time to explore MS's IDE and .NET, but just can't at the moment], I can see a maturing across the board and real interest in interoperation - it just has to be, because like it or not, "property" and all that attends that word drives this, and the costs of working in a purist environment just cost too much and for too long. RH I assess recognizes that it needs MS more than MS needs RH. At a micro level, we see and do the same things...reaching out to help other devs get something going, or bridge areas where they are weak - with Microsoft software. |
