Opinion: Despite the hype, electronic books and higher-powered small devices are years away from being ubiquitous. What's smaller than a Tablet PC but larger than a Pocket PC? I don't know, at least not for sure, but I am expecting Bill Gates to clue me in real soon. My colleague, Mary Jo Foley, has been hearing rumors of a new small form factor device that's been making the rounds at Microsoft. That alone is not reason enough to expect an announcement. | ||

| quux: I hope that someday soon all pocket devices and next-gen phones will have 3 or 4 USB ports to allow the use of a real keyboard, mouse or other pointing device, and a monitor. Toothpicks and keydots just aren't productive. You are correct in that users either scroll or squint a lot on a pocket pc. |

Perhaps not more highpowered as much as full featured. I'm currently looking around for a PDA phone to purchase for work, my dilemma is this, it's close to impossible to find what I want. The XDA Mini is just about perfect in terms of size and looks - but it doesn't have WiFi and it doesn't have VGA. The XDA IIi does have WiFi, but it's a lot bigger (not a huge drama but something to consider) and still doesn't have VGA!! Then to complicate matters a bit more, ideally I'd like it to have a GPS receiver built in (rather than attaching something onto the back which is almost as big as the PDA to start with) - and you can find very few PDA phone's that have GPS, WiFi and VGA and the 3 or so that do have this huge flap on the back which is the GPS receiver - it's ugly! If the XDA IIi had VGA and GPS and stayed the same size then it would just about be perfect - if they could all all of those features into the Mini then I'd be over the moon, but the problem is that you always have to compromise on something. If anyone has any idea about PDA phone's that do have all of those features (GPS for the time being is a "nice to have") please let me know. |
