Microsoft to exchange 32 bit Windows for 64 | |

WE MET a senior Microsoft bloke, a member of the Windows 64 bit group and he told us that within three months customers will be able to replace its existing copy for a brand new Windows 64 bit version. The RTM (Release to Manufacture) version is soon to be ready. Official release is expected toward the end of the April as we originally suggested in our previous part. We were quite surprised with this noble action and Microsoft has been very nice to the early 64 bit supporters giving away all the betas for free. This finally wiped away all our fears that users of existing 32 bit Windows will have to go out and buy a copy of new 64 bit Windows. | ||

It will be interesting to see how this is implemented....
Does it cover home AND Pro versions? I get Technet Enterprise Plus and ActionPac so I'll probably get it either way. TL |

I am curious if they are going to allow corporate customers to upgrade to 64bit for free? Will they have to get a seperate VLK for the 64bit version and pay for it or will they be able to use their current VLK for both the 32bit and 64bit client.

Enterprise licenses usually cover the use of all versions of a given product. For example, an enterprise license holder may use any version of Windows for the desktop. This gives corporations leeway to upgrade sometimes hundreds of thousands of computers that may take months or even years to accomplish.
Among other considerations are that a certain code base may only run on a previous version of Windows, etc. This is one of the reasons that Microsoft has encouraged corporations to virtualize around this problem with Virtual PC 2004/Server 2005. The bottom line is I see a while before all the firmware and drivers are in place to support the new platform. Unless your buying hardware that is built around 64bit Windows you may be in for difficulty in getting all peripherals, etc. to work. If you are plugging in a 64bit motherboard and CPU as an upgrade don't be surprised if there are no 64bit drivers to support the orginal peripherals. |
