Whither mighty Microsoft Corp.? Don't dump your stocks in the software giant, experts warn. But they also say the ``days of Microsoft's hegemony may soon be over,'' according to a new report by Framingham-based ComputerWorld. ``What you might see is an 800-pound gorilla on steroids (today) and five years from now it might be a 400-pound gorilla on vitamins,'' said Don Tennant, editor of ComputerWorld, which recently held a panel discussion among experts about the future of the information-technology sector. The increasing competition from Linux open-source technologies, Apple Computer Inc. and Internet-focused companies will slowly chip away at the Redmond, Wash.-based behemoth's dominance, Tennant said. | ||

This looks like article that we all read circa 1998,199,2000.....
Wasn't the US gov intervention onbehalf of their competition suppose to bring about the down fall of MS? Wasn't Netscape suppose to bring about the down fall of MS? Wasn't Java/Sun/Dumb terminals suppose to bring about the downfall of MS? What ever the scenario they seem adept at adapting or buying out :) Even piracy works in their favor! more users. |

#1: The gov't action was to stop MS from abusing their monopoly, not "bringin them down". Unfortunately, the business-friendly Republicans put a stop to that when they got into power. Netscape was never really a threat to MS, just being a browser and all, but that didn't stop MS from overreacting and abusing their monopoly to destroy another competitor. Yep, copy the compeition then destroy them illegally. That's what MS is all about -- innovation, competition and choice.
#2: Show me where innovation is coming from these days, beside Apple. Not from MS. The fact is that a lot of the software we need these days has already been defined, so true innovation gets harder. Plus, something can be very innovative, but does anyone need it, especially on the scale that would define it as a "killer app"? BitTorrent was innovative cough *open source* cough), yet I doubt that more than 1% of Internet-connected users have heard of it. |

Apple is hardly innovating.
GM has quite a bit of innovation now that you ask. |

So basically what this article is confirming...
In the long run we were better off that the Microsoft anti-trust lawsuit failed for Oracle, et al. because it forced these companies to compete rather than be complacent. |
