Microsoft has posted a critical fix to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on its Windows Update site, and pushed it to users relying on Automatic Update. It may not be the second Tuesday of the month -- Microsoft's normal day to release security bulletins and patches -- but the Redmond, Wash.-based developer has posted a critical fix to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on its Windows Update site, and pushed it to users relying on Automatic Update. The problem, which has actually been public since December 2004, also affects Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. In some cases, installing third-party anti-virus or firewall software -- Microsoft didn't name makers or package titles -- can bring down the operating system in a Blue Screen of Death with a cryptic error that reads "Stop 0x05 (INVALID_PROCESS_ATTACH_ATTEMPT)." Ironically, the last time a Blue Screen of Death made the news, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates was on the stage at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, demonstrating Windows Media Center. | ||

| It's been said before, but MCE didn't BSOD as the article implies. An XBOX running an in-development video game "bluescreened" when the game caused an out of memory exception. |

Perhaps you should have watched the video to see for yourself, tgnb. It's quite clear that the Media Center never had a BSOD. The problem reportedly was with the IR remote repeater... and the video supporting that aside, considering the problems I've had with remotes not working, that's a far more likely candidate.
I built a Media Center PC recently and was expecting a bit of a hassle to set it up based on what I've read, but it was actually quite easy. I thought the Media Center applications were part of a separate setup (it comes on two CDs), but it incorporates both CDs in the normal Windows setup process and installs the entire Media Center edition. It didn't work immediately at that point, because after I installed the eVGA dual-tuner card drivers, I didn't realize that the nVidia DVD decoder had not yet been installed (it comes with the eVGA card, but as a separate setup). After that, I hooked up the cable, walked through the Media Center configuration setup (about 10 minutes), and everything was up and running. I don't watch a lot of TV, but this was kind of a fun project (and my old system needed replacing), and it works pretty slick. BTW--reporting back on the eVGA card... I've had no problems with mine, and the quality is quite good. Either I'm lucky, or there were just a few folks that had a bad batch out there. It has much better picture quality than some of the ATI all-in-wonder cards I saw a few years ago (maybe they're better now?). |

| I've installed AVG, AntiVir, Trend Micro, Norton AV and Symantec Corporate AV, eTrust. All work okay as long as they are installed in a clean system. No blue screens here. What are the offending programs? |

bluvg I have Media Center 2005 installed on one HD in my desktop box though i need to get a tv tuner card. the media center software seems to be pretty limited and quite crippled IMO :( for example to view a DVD i have to insert the actual DVD. I can't watch a DVD from my ripped dvd collection (ripped to ISO using dvdshrink keeping the full size).
As for the BSOD, i only referenced it because people here claim it no longer happens. I have seen plenty of them on XP especially with bad drivers. |

tgnb, there are free 3rd-party apps/plugins available for MCE you can use to watch ripped DVDs. | Thanks n4cer. I bought a Dell Dimension 8400 with MCE and a DLP projection TV late last year for my den, but I've been so busy I haven't had time to really explore all that it offers. Those web sites should help me get the most out of MCE. |

| tgnb: That's right, the OS never crashes from itself, it's only ever caused by bad drivers or bad hardware. |
