Internet Explorer 7: New, More Secure Internet Explorer for Windows XP Announced
Time: 23:40 EST/04:40 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Brian Kvalheim

On Tuesday February 15, 2005, Bill Gates announced plans for a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP SP2 as part of the keynote address at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco, CA. The new version will be called Internet Explorer 7 and a beta version will be available this summer. This information is under NDA and reserved for our Microsoft MVPs and should be treated as confidential until this information goes public at 9:30AM PST.

The following is our strategy and messaging for the Internet Explorer 7 announcement:

Microsoft browser security strategy · In today’s interconnected world, security is a top priority for Microsoft’s customers. Browsers are particularly targeted for malicious attacks because of their role as the Internet gateway for PC users. Microsoft works to protect customers in multiple ways, including engineering excellence in software development, technical innovation for new security features, rapid and broad distribution of security updates for browser vulnerabilities, and an industry-leading 24x7 security incident response via the Microsoft Security Response Center.

Major security upgrade to IE in SP2 · In the interest of helping to better protect our customers, we delivered XP SP2 last year, which included a major security upgrade to IE. IE in SP2 features a much stronger security infrastructure to help thwart malware attacks, block suspicious content, and eliminate many common spoofing attempts. In addition, it provides users with more control over the software that is installed on their system when browsing the Internet, helping to block unwanted downloads, including spyware.

· Response to SP2 has been extremely positive. To date, we have delivered more than 170 million copies of SP2. A recent report from Web analytics firm WebSideStory shows that almost half of all computer users browsing the web on weekends are using SP2.

Road ahead · But we recognize there is more to be done, and we are committed to continued innovation, and to work to stay ahead of malicious hackers. That is why Microsoft later this year will ship Windows AntiSpyware, which is already in beta testing, to further protect Internet Explorer users from spyware.

· Microsoft today is also committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. This version, called IE 7, will add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility customers have come to expect from IE.

· IE 7 will build on and broaden the progress made in SP 2, while putting in place even stronger defenses against phishing, malware and spyware.

· A beta version of IE 7 will be available this summer with the final version shipping once IE 7 meets the quality standards our customers demand.

Should the link go somewhere?

I love how competition is forcing Microsoft to do what they wouldn't do on their own.

No link - just a news announcement.

The announcement said that IE7 "will add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility customers have come to expect from IE."

This suggests that improved compliance with standards is not a priority.

How about making it part of XP sp3? Also sounds like the beta could run until ... Longhorn ships.

#6 By 13030 (198.22.121.120) at 2/15/2005 2:21:57 PM
Firefox is better than all the AW MS apologists want to admit. Sorry guys, MS is smarter than you when it comes to understanding their competition. Nothing gets MS more fired up than a capable competitor. Years of security flaws did not change MS's insistence that there would be no IE update until Longhorn. Along comes Firefox and viola, not just a 6.X IE update, but a spiffy, new version 7.0 of IE!

#7 By 7797 (63.76.44.205) at 2/15/2005 2:25:16 PM
"That's why competition is good."

Yeah, however its sad that Microsoft is only doing it because increased competition is forcing them to do it. I wish they would have done this a long time ago.. all on their own. Then maybe I could have started to trust them that on the next product they won't let me down once they have a monopoly in its market.

#8 By 22601 (69.194.226.220) at 2/15/2005 3:05:20 PM
Reply to #8: the W3C standards/recommendations.

Note that Microsoft is a prominant member of the W3C.

Note also that each version of IE has been significantly more compliant with these standards / recommendations, and that IE4, IE5.0, IE5.5, and IE6 were the most compliant browsers available when they were released, so Microsoft clearly has more than a passing interest in supporting these standards / recommendations. So please don't bring up the issue of 'de facto' standards: de facto is just what exists -- imperfectly -- at this one point in time.

Halcyon - MS also announced (though not in the press release posted here) that their AntiSpyware software will be expanded and also be free.

tgnb - This is why you want robust competition in a market, so that consumers receive better products.

The idea that you should kneecap Microsoft so that they couldn't compete, thereby allowing lousy products to reign in the marketplace never made any sense from a good for consumers standpoint.

#11 By 15406 (216.191.227.90) at 2/15/2005 4:47:41 PM
#14: that's just so ass-backward, but whatever...

I can hardly wait to see what MS *innovates* this time around.

#12 By 7797 (63.76.44.205) at 2/15/2005 6:30:42 PM
"The idea that you should kneecap Microsoft so that they couldn't compete, thereby allowing lousy products to reign in the marketplace never made any sense from a good for consumers standpoint."

Although your statement is technically correct, it is somewhat irrellevant since its Microsoft who kneecaps its competitors and not the other way around.

Press release link: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/feb05/02-15RSA05KeynotePR.asp

MS mentions nothing other than security enhancements, so I don't expect anything more than that. Usability features like tabs will probably be absent (disappointing for those that love tabs), but I wouldn't put it past MS to sneak some in at the last moment, like they did with ad-blocking in XP SP2. Even if it's just security enhancements in 7.0, the demand for that in its products (and IE, in particular) makes the demand for usability features in IE miniscule in comparison. Coporate customers don't need or want tabs; they want security, and 7.0 seems more targeted at companies than at individual users (who, in turn, will be getting something that they seem to want even more: free antispyware support).

I was referring to the anti-trust lawsuit, which failed.

"I was referring to the anti-trust lawsuit, which failed."

Excuse me? How did it fail?

#22 I think he means it failed in respect to splitting Microsoft up into smaller companies. If not, I'm sure soda will chime in and correct me =)

<duplicate of #24>

#17 "1) An honest web site that admits to all the security holes in GoogleFox "
I'm sure they'll have one as soon as Microsoft does the same. We want a nice easy to get to web site so all of Microsoft's customers can see all the security holes in IE. That page should also include the time it took them to fix existsing bugs as well as the time that's passed for outstanding bugs with no fixes in sight. Additionally, given how open OSS is with their bugs, I'd also like to see the full details of every patch made available. Not just a summary that's passed the marketing and some details on which files were modifed but an actual account of everything that was fixed in that file. If 4 things were fixed, we want to know about them not just the most important one. And hell whilst you're there why not actually show the fixes themselves!

"2) A place to find patches."
You're right, FireFox (not sure about GoogleFox as that's your own creation) needs to sort out it's patching problems. This is something we all welcome.

"5) Better security"
Once again this is something we all welcome. We want FireFox to be even more secure than it already is!

tgnb - It failed in kneecapping Microsoft, i.e. saying what they could or could not develop as a software company.

ClosedStandards - I'm still generally opposed to software patents.

#19 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 2/16/2005 10:44:36 AM
ClosedStandards - You certainly have patience. Most people give up being a troll after only a few days... yet you've been doing it for like a year.

#20 By 21705 (142.213.176.140) at 2/16/2005 11:55:11 AM
"with the final version shipping once IE 7 meets the quality standards our customers demand"

So if the beta testers don't stop telling that it is not CSS2 and 3 compliant and all of that then maybe it won't be only a security update.

It will be called 7.0, not 6.x so bring on the new stuff!

#21 By 7797 (63.76.44.6) at 2/16/2005 2:26:29 PM
"tgnb - It failed in kneecapping Microsoft"

Kneecaping Microsoft was never a goal in the Antitrust trial.

#22 By 7797 (63.76.44.6) at 2/16/2005 6:38:36 PM
sodablue reappeared but he's already complaining about pop-unders here again. I guess he likes complaining better than using an alternative browser that would solve these kinds of problems. Or maybe he thinks the time has come to see if I still kept my hall of shame list of comments. So far he hasnt said anything worth adding to the list though :) so thats positive.
