Microsoft Seen Poised to Push Antivirus | |

Will consumers and businesses trust the software giant to protect its own products? Consensus is building among industry watchers that Microsoft will have anti-spyware and antivirus products on the market for businesses and consumers by year-end. Many expect Bill Gates to detail such a product rollout during his keynote address at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco in three weeks. Microsoft declined to discuss that prospect this week. However, with Microsoft's pending security splash regarded as a fait accompli, antivirus and anti-spyware vendors are sizing up their chances of withstanding the Redmond giant. Business customers, stocked up on antivirus but now eager to buy spyware protection, wonder if a Microsoft entry would drive down costs, or if Microsoft--whose software seems to always require patching--really can be counted on as the first responder in worm and virus outbreaks. | ||

MS can't even keep their OS secure, I don't know if I would/could trust them with my AV....

| Name an OS that is "secure." If you don't know if you would/could trust MS with your AV, then it should be because you know that scum love gunning for MS and their products. That's probably a very valid reason to not use an MS AV product, but the rampant myth that MS makes inferior products definitely isn't. |

#4 Dead on!!! ISA 2000 Enterprise oh so rocks - AD Integrated, ICSA Group IV Compliant and applications filters - it is definately the best FW I have used - one can securely publish Exchange Servers - even 2000 using forced encryption over TCP - most cool for MS MAPI clients! 2004 is even better and will certainly be as good when Enterprise comes out and support AD Integration. We just love it and recommend it at both the edge and perimeter - it is line speed capable and when built well, smokes all else I have used. XP SP2's new firewall borrows its on before OS capabilities an dON after shutdown, too.
It does demand that "chuck" have his stuff together - e.g., no toss it on and use some default policies to do secure a NW. 2004 is easier and what is so cool is CVP integration - for example, CVP defs are supported bby a lot of vendors, so one can apply come very complex polcies at the egde when authenticating remote users - say on a VPN [via connectoids]. I'd trust MS to do a great job with AV any day - base dupon what I have dealt with while using ISA since early 2001. And if one cannot secure a Windows box, then they simply are naive and untrained. Same as any OS. |

Not only can I name it (OpenBSD), I can even provide you a link (http://www.openbsd.org/) where you can download it for free! You will even get the complete source code with which you can do as you please! Isn't it nice that there's people out there that believe (and stand by that belief) in full disclosure of security problems! |

Windows 2003 Enterprise went RTM on March 28 2003. (Just under a year ago) OpenBSD 3.0 was released on December 1 2001. (Just over 3 years ago) v3.3 might be a slightly more accuate candidate for comparison, it was released on April 30 2003. So Windows 2003 Enterprise managed to just about beat the total number of advisories OpenBSD has in 1/3rd of the time. Good going Microsoft! And 5 of those advisories are yet to be patched! |
