Microsoft to Require Windows Piracy Check | |

Users will have to validate their OS before using two download sites. Microsoft in mid-2005 will put a piracy lock on two of its download Web sites, requiring all Windows XP and Windows 2000 users to validate their copy of Windows as genuine before downloading software, the company says. The lock will be placed on the Microsoft's Download Center and Windows Update Web sites, which offer applications such as Windows Media Player and the new Windows AntiSpyware product as well as security updates for Microsoft products. Validation is not required for Windows Automatic Updates, says David Lazar, a director in Microsoft's Windows Client group. Automatic Updates is a feature in Windows that is used to download and install security updates to Microsoft software. | ||

I spent good hard earned money to buy my copy of Windows XP therefore I should be treated like a first class citizen at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I have no pity for people who've stolen their copies of Windows XP.
And with the Windows XP firewall I have in SP2 I don't buy the argument that unpatched pirated copies make me less secure, because they can't touch my installation. I have no pity for criminals. |

| Why not essentially disable the user's pirated copy of XP? Don't allow an non-system processes to run. The only thing they should be able to do is buy windows. |

I have absolutely zero issues with this. Except... :)
Security patches. You make the holes, you provide the cork. Period. The Internet will be a much more secure place for it. The idea of millions of unpatch systems out there, and now steadily getting _further_ out of date, is a frightening proposition. JMHO. TL |

I agree with RMD. Don't leave unsafe (and progressing to even more unsafe) copies out there. Kill them off.

First off, get a life that consists of being something other than obnoxious to every person you meet. You might find it refreshing. Secondly, I'm only going by every report that has been written stating that security updates would not be available. TL |
