TODAY’S donation pushes Bill Gates into an even more exalted position as the world’s biggest philanthropist.
The Gates foundation, which is worth $30 billion, (£17billion), is now the largest charity to have been created by a single benefactor or private company by a factor of three, following a previous $3 billion gift from its founder last July. Mr Gates has stated that he intends to give away 90 per cent of his fortune, which is currently valued at about $50 billion.
The causes to which he has channelled his wealth — global health inequalities, education programmes, public libraries and projects around his home town of Seattle — have changed dramatically because of his contributions.
To date, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation has been the largest recipient of his charity. His pledge today follows an initial $750 million grant in 1999, which was used to help to set up the organisation to support research and improve access to vaccines.

Bill Gates gets a bad rap and is the subject of endless joking all because he's the head of one of the largest and most successful corporations in the world and in history. If our American culture weren't now so anti-big business (i.e. in another time and place), Gates could be seen as one of the most generous and revered figures in our history, akin to, say, Rockefeller. It's a shame. Bill Gates, the man, has few if any of the characteristics that many people despise about corporate America's chiefs. 25 years later, he still seems as much of a geek as the rest of us. I've always known that he the was incredibly charitable, but I had no idea that he intends to give away 90% of his fortune. That's incredible... and, again, it's a shame that so many choose to think so poorly of him.

Way to go Bill Gates. About time the world recognize you greatness.
BTW, I like both open source and profit driven software. I think room exist for both. The radicals on both sides( just like in religion) always use name calling or the sky is falling anologies to keep the fire burning.
The important thing to remember is the best software should win. If Linux was better to me than XP, then I would use it(Linux). Not because I am a communist, but because it is the best(for what I want to do). XP ( in my humble opinion ) is the best(for my tasks) so that's what my three computers are running.
Even though I don't currently use Linux. I think it serves a great purpose(competition). Which I think is needed for consumers to get the best product. Firefox will cause IE to be a better product. Just wait and see.
tgnb- you are right. I made the changes - Thanks

GhostRider I agree with you almost completely. The only exception is that I wouldn't say Windows XP is the best, nor Linux is the best. I would say, for some things I find Windows XP to be the best suited OS to get the job done, while for certain other tasks I find Linux to be the best suited OS. And of course all this is entirely objective.

If BG were to give every American $1 million dollars, it wouldn't even equal up to (not even close) 1/50th of what he is worth... he wouldn't even notice it....
I want a million. That's all... I'm not greedy. One can live (quite well) off the interest for that much money.

#2 comparing Bill Gates to Rockefeller (or Carnegie) is strangely apt in this context. All three are associated with substantial wealth garnered with monopolistic business practices.
Rockefeller and Carnegie later both came to be associated with their philanthropic trusts in their later years.
History writes a dichotomous picture of these gentlemen; ruthless in business, but generous in their old age and after death through their respective estate trusts.
Will history say the same of Mr. Gates? I suspect so, in spite of his real generosity.

#9 Sorry, if you use anything non Microsoft made or even dare to criticise any of Microsoft's actions, then several people on this site (csmac3144, Parkker etc.) will automatically consider you to be a socialist or even worse... a communist! And everyone knows that's bad!
#14 "Did microsoft "innovate" by inventing XML?"
Not on their own no, but they were 1 of 3 editors working on the specification.
"Didn't billg said there wasn't much into that thing called the internet?"
Yes he did, and then he published the 2nd edition to remove that little... umm... mistake on his behalf!

Simpler - "if you gave OSS two cows, they'd milk them dry and jack up the distribution, which would spoil long before the first child was able to wet his coco-puff's - if you gave Bill Gates two cows, he'd sell one of them and buy a bull..."
There were once two German countries - same people, different systems. In the west they enjoyed what they called the "economical miracle" - in the east, they endured one economic disaster after another - right up until they were unified and became the strongest economic force in the EU. Ask any one of them which system is ultimately better for the greatest number of people...
#6 is dead on - long live Jefferson and very sincere praise to Mr Gates for making such a meaningful difference for so many. Unlike many who ultimately gave - he and his wife have always given and then some.
