Linux Vulnerabilities Creep Toward the Desktop
Time: 08:39 EST/13:39 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: Chris Hedlund

As Linux increasingly hits the enterprise and consumer mainstream, a growing number of security threats are emerging which prey on holes in applications and files managed by desktop users.

On Wednesday of this week, Linux vendors Red Hat, Novell and Mandrakesoft released patches for several vulnerabilities. These threats ranged from the moderate to highly critical, as ranked by Danish security monitoring firm Secunia.

But that's just not true! OSS zealots have been saying that for years! It's NOT true I tell you, not true. And it' NOT true that the more popular it becomes the more vulnerable it becomes. It's just not true!

Why are these news sites spreading lies and fud about linux when it's not true!

Love,

(continuation from post #2)... Search is also really overrated. (ok, enough with my tiny rants)

Right now the only thing that makes Linux look more secure is that they are hidden behind thier own security by obscurity.

Windows has hundreds of millions of users, millions of hackers trying to kill it every day and they get a few bugs a month that are for the most part patched in a timely manner.

Linux has less than 10 million users, have never had a user with an IQ of less than 100 ever use the damn thing (dumb people find the darndest bugs) and yet Linux has more than just a few problems a month reported.

When this thing takes off its going to be bad! Its nowhere near where Windows is today.

What do you think is going to happen when the ammount of people using it doubles- they have a lot of work ahead of them. And of course when the tech sector really gets going agian, where will all this free labor to fix all these things come from??

Sorry, but if you run a Windows 2000/2003 network and have half the problems that are being reported then you suck.

#3 No-one is forcing you to look at these articles, let alone read or comment on them, if you feel the need to shut out everything non-Microsoft and continue on your path to complete ignorance then no-one is going to stop you. I'd say (and people like Brian and Todd might be able to verify this from their statistics etc.) that the majority of users on this site (yourself excluded of course) like to read about all things I.T. not just when they have 100% to do with Microsoft. That's why so many users comment on articles to do with Apple, Linux, IBM, etc, because believe it or not, even though Microsoft may not be mentioned, there's not a lot of areas in I.T. that don't in one way or another involve Microsoft (or will involve Microsoft in the near future). I don't know of any sites that focus solely on positive Microsoft stories (as you don't like any stories that dare to mention anything even slightly critical of Microsoft), but someone else on this site might be able to help you out!

chris, you are correct. This particular article is our third most popular article this weekend, behind the linux fud article and the number one article clicked through, scriptomatic.

ActiveWin - the professional wrestling of internet "news" sites

Societies where individuals cannot own property, or control the disposition of property are communist, or worse.

Hal has one thing right, one can commercialize products based upon OSS, it's just more difficult to do and make a profit with less capable, or less well integrated tools. We've supported people along that path for nearly five years, but sadly, have seen them lose a ton of money in the process. It's not for a lack of a good product, or good systems, but the costs associated with them have been so high that little is left to move the product. Time has been a factor, too - time to develop has killed them and exposed them to competitive parity.

and #6 unlike a lot of folks, I/we run Linuces in production for clients - lot's of it RAC systems with RHE - so yeah, keeping up with "all" platforms is needed and cool - I'd just like to have a channel for MS products that was actually about MS products and not the stuff I see here so often - and outside of MS sites like Technet and MSDN - you know, to get an outside perspective. We also dev for the MAC, too and very actively run two large ad agency environments. The facts are, one can manage an MS environment a lot easier and get more done with fewer resources. MS's servers work well together and there are a lot of them - one can get a lot done quickly and for less cost.

It does not surprise me at all that vulnerabilities are being found in the Linuces - that is just so normal for software. People after all, write it, and it is bound to be imperfect. One does have to guard against making an assumption that just because a *nix is less well known that is it more secure. That simply is not true and people have been exploiting that kind of thinking for decades with the Unices.

The reality is that Windows OS'es and *nix are so similar - they do so much the same way, or in the end, do the same things, however they are executed differently. Of course one [win] has its windowing sub-system running in Kernel mode, but both are monolithic designs and they work so similarly. Practices, default policies, and managing them is also often the very same - be it one person, or a large network. I used to think there was a way to communicate using examples and to show how MS provided the better value - it really does and as one that signs a lot of checks and manages both the business and technical side of the IT/MIS issue, I can share that it is very costly to run either a mixed environment or any of the *nix - they just cost more and it is not because of more expensive talent - it is for the lack of the integration of management systems across the platform. People may not like it, but it is true and because we have to actually live in both worlds at the same time, we see it for what it is.

#12 "Societies where individuals cannot own property, or control the disposition of property are communist, or worse."
Woah! You mentioned communism, and we all know that's bad! Why did you stop there? You should have mentioned Hitler, Stalin etc. to scare us all a little bit more. Let me guess, you're an American. I say that because there is no other nation on this planet whose citizens are so paranoid about communism. I'm not going to preach about communism (as I have my own views on it after having lived in a country under Communism) but I do still have to say that you're rather ignorant if you believe that Capitalism is the only way to go. There are pros and cons to Capitalism just as there are pros and cons to Communism, Socialism and most ism's, especially when you look at individual models that are based on those ism's!

" to get an outside perspective"
Are you sure that this is what you REALLY want? I ask because you seem to complain about any article which mentions any criticism of Microsoft whatsoever. It really doesn't seem that you are interested in any other perspective other than that complete and utter praise for anything Microsoft.

"The facts are...."
Try not to confuse your own personal opinions with facts.

#15 Sure, but you'll have to get your Mom's permission to move out of her basement first.

#14 Imperfect as it is, it is the very best and getting better every generation.
