Led by Microsoft Corp., the computer industry has been trying for years to invade the living room with PCs designed to serve up TV, music, home movies and photos. So far, the makers of standalone set-top boxes have held their ground both in desired features and price. But the battle to become your entertainment center hub is starting to get interesting. I agree with the ready for primetime comment. I have been using MCE 2005 for about 1 months now and have tired other PVR software (linux based) and i think it is working really well - never had a problem with it runs solid. | So far I'm in the minority. I prefer NVIDIA's bundled software that comes with their video card/TV tuners. The interface may not be as pretty but I find that it works faster and better than the Microsoft Media Center does. Maybe you guys (2,3,4) are using an ATI video card/TV tuner? |

Bobsireno, I am speaking of the MCE ability with the Extenders (Xbox Extender in my case) solely. I can't speak from experience that using the MCE PC standalone is any worse or better than competing software or that NVIDIA's card/software is better than ATI's. I have an ATI card though, FWIW.
I was commenting that in my experience, this is indeed ready for primetime, at least in our household it has been. |

I'm watching mine now, and cannot live without it. Cool trick #1 for me....work on wireless slate in living room... remote record Fox News <Greta Rocks!> and use the skip scene button to blow past commercials. Slate away my email - adding way cool clipped touches from send to from OneNote and add a personal touch with the pen. Clients dig it and ask..."how do you do that????" and bingo, another incremental bit of work that simply sahres what we ourselves do to make life and work a little better and nicer for all. MCE 2005 is solida as stone and between games for the boys and IM [yeah, AOL via BYOA] for the girls, it so rocks. And have you watched a couple of kids play NFL Street 2, or Halo2 on a DLP - it is a hoot. We love MCE and MCX and the kids record every re-run of Fresh Prince <they love that guy> and Some wild X this or that anime. It's just fun and IT IS solid as a rock! Oh...and "mimic" TiVo?
