Brian posted this yesterday over at ActiveXbox.com. Don't forget to stop by every now and then! The Voodoo Extreme site is reporting that the Bungie team may work on a project to port Halo 2 to the next generation Xbox, adding in additional content and improving overall gameplay and picture quality. From the news, Bungie may be sinking some of that quarter of a billion dollar profits that Halo 2 made into a Xbox 2 port project. | ||

I'll bet you can (though the optional hard drive will probably be required - if they even have an optional hard drive) play original Xbox games on the second Xbox.
I've begun to wonder if the reason Halo 2 took so long to finally go gold was because they were building the Xbox 2 version of Halo at the same time... I just couldn't figure out why they would put the next version of their best game out one year before a brand new system came out... I don't see how they could release Xbox 2 without something dealing with Halo. |

Phaedrus: PS2 plays PS1 games, but how many people do you know that actually still plays those PS1 games? My friend has tons of PS1 games and he NEVER has played them on his PS2.
Backwards compatability is nice and all, but even if you intend on playing the older games, you probably won't just because of the simple fact that they are older games. |

| Halcyon, that's what I figured they would do, but it took them three years to make Halo 2, but they are only leaving 1 year for Halo 3 on Xbox 2? I really don't think MS will release Xbox 2 without a Halo product. |

Completely agree... but it works wonders marketing wise to be able to sell it as backwards compatible... those same people who will never play any of their older games will be the first ones to choose the console with backwards compatibility over a console with no backwards compatibility... just incase they want to play their older games, or just so they don't have to get rid of their video game library. |

| I really don't think backwards compatibility is a big issue. PS1 - PS2 is the first of it's kind. And even that has changed with the PSTwo they released this fall. They are supporting less PS1 games in the newest slimline version of PSTwo. |

Hal, like i said. PS1/PS2 only are the ones with the backward compatibility as released and intended. ONLY them. We are talking consoles. I wasn't talking about handhelds (gameboy). My son has a Gameboy Advanced SP (santa gave it to him for Xmas). He never had one before, so backward compatibility wasn't a issue at all.
There is no advantage to backward compatibility other than saving space of one unit on your entertainment center. And I don't want to pay the additional cost and research/dev for this feature and have the price reflected in my purchase if I don't need that feature. Similar to the Xbox not offering DVD movie playback by default. Why should I pay the DVD license fee (and why should MS) if I didn't need it or want to use that feature. I have purchased the Xbox Extender, which includes the DVD license, so I am all set anyway :P |
