Mozilla's Lightning to strike Outlook? | |

The new project, code-named Lightning, aims to integrate Mozilla's calendar application, Sunbird, with its recently released Thunderbird e-mail application. That integration is aimed right at the heart of Microsoft's widely used Outlook software. "I think Outlook leaves a lot of room for a fast competitor," said a Mozilla volunteer involved in the project, who asked not to be named. "There's a lot of user dissatisfaction out there, and it will be interesting to see what the market looks like once there's a strong open-source alternative." | ||

are you nuts.. competition for OlkExpress maybe.. (which is a good thing) but not for Outlook itself. I've never met a single person who used outlook 97 and higher along with exchange server and ever purposely switched to something else. Dont get me wrong I'm sure some have, but I doubt that many overall.

| Outlook is the BEST PIM/Email program in one out there! And it is totally awesome, and works wonders with Exchange. |

I do freelance IT work for SOHOs and have a number of clients, and myself, running Outlook 2000 without Exchange (as internet mail only)
Thus far it is the only app that I have found that combines e-mail and calendar, syncs with various PIMs, esp Palm, and works pretty well, when it works. I get a lot of complaints from clients about the app not always opening, mysterious crashes and just plain slow functioning. Some of these I solve and some I don't. I agree with #9. Like, wow :)
Outlook 2003 isn't perfect, though. The SPAM filter is brain-dead. It only add's blocks based on domains or email addresses. In other words, it's not a basian filter (sp?) and thus will never be truly effective. It can't learn. From a performance standpoint, OL2003 can turn into a REAL pig. I've seen it lock up machines for 5 minutes doing 'something'. We never really understood what that 'something' was. It can get extremely sluggish as PST file sizes grow. Or not grow. Not sure what the pattern is here. Maintenance/Support. When Outlook works, it's fine. When it's broken, jeez. The structure of Outlook, it's code, it's files, etc... is a nightmare. You know an email program is too complex, at it's structure, when it _requires_ certain maintenance actions be done with command-line switches. And why the hell should ANY email/PIM need a "Safe Mode" (which I've had to use many times). In short, from a features standpoint I think it's nice. I just can't help but feel Outlook is like the game Jengo. One little block away from crumbling down around itself. TL |
