Microsoft may charge extra for security software | |

Microsoft Corp. disclosed plans Thursday to offer frustrated users of its Windows software new tools within 30 days to remove spyware programs secretly running on computers. But it might cost extra in coming months. In a shift from past practice, the world's largest software manufacturer said it may charge consumers for future versions of the new protective technology, which Microsoft acquired by buying a small New York software firm. Terms of the sale of Giant Company Software Inc. weren't disclosed. | ||

That USED to be the case, and 6 months ago I would have agreed 100% with this statement. Not any more. The development of the "Drive-By" Spyware Install has change all this, and it is SOLELY due to holes in Internet Explore that this is capable of happening. This is NOT a Myth. By generating the 'need' I refer to the holes in IE that allow such things.
IMHO, there will be no true IE browser security as long as ActiveX and other security holes exist in IE. TL |

al_fiend, Ad-Aware SE Personal is free for home use (non-commercial). If you use it in a business (even a home-based business), you are required to purchase a license for Ad-Aware SE Plus or Professional. (Lavasoft also sells the additional features of Plus & Professional to home users, telling you that they are intentionally making sure that the free version will never become "too" good.)
SpyBot S&D is the closest thing to full-featured anti-spyware that you can get for free, including commercial use. While SpyBot is far better than nothing, it is only about 60-80% effective. If you're lucky, you'll never get any spyware from the other 20-40% but don't kid yourself: the anti-spyware industry is in its infancy. It's too early to call any winners, freeware or otherwise. |

| #2: I’ve cleaned spyware from dozens of PC’s. Giant’s program repeatedly removed deeply buried spyware that Ad-Aware and Spybot both miss even with the latest updates. The unfortunate thing about spyware is that one occasionally needs to use 3 or even 4 programs, and some occasional registry tweaking, to fully clean the evil stuff from a PC. |

Hypocrite. You tired of paying for MacOS X updates yet? If I remember correctly, you apple-ites have bought 3 versions of OS X so far? I guess "creating a need" isn't confined to BillG, is it. |

Since Windows has such a large user %age, and OSX/Linux has such a small amount, spyware and virus writers aren't wasting their time on those OS's. If either of these two were in MS's position of OS dominance, THEY would be having the spyware/virus woes. It's a simple case of most bang for the writer's buck. |
