Microsoft near settling private suits | |

The Redmond, software maker tentatively has agreed to a five-year project to provide software and computers to more than 14,000 of the poorest schools in the U.S., resolving most of its pending private class-action lawsuits, lawyers and academics briefed on the case said. Many details of the complex agreement still were being worked out Monday night, but the estimated cost to Microsoft will be about $1.1 billion, with additional support coming from other contributions, these people said. Microsoft has $36 billion in cash on hand. The unusual settlement is intended to answer claims that Microsoft abused its market power by overcharging millions of computer buyers across the country. The agreement, hammered out over the weekend in Redmond, must be approved by U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz in Baltimore, who is overseeing the class-action suits. | ||

| So 14,000 school get free Microsoft software, so the kids and teachers can be even more familiar with Windows than they were before. This is quite a win for Microsoft. I'm all for it, for when I was in school we did everything with Macs and Apples. :( |

Apple used to give a lot of free stuff to schools... The thought being that these kids would grow up equating Apple with computers.
In high school I learned word processing on an Apple II. Strangely, I've never seen Apple computers in anything other than a school environment. Obviously their project failed quite miserably. |

| Um, Apple's market share is about 4.5% and conservative estimates put Windows at 88%. That puts Apple at about 1/20 of Microsoft's market share. Considering Apple started first, I'd say it isn't much of a success. Perhaps miserable failure is too strong, but compared to Microsoft I'd say the language is perhaps justified. |

#5. Yeah, yeah, there are exceptions and I'm sure the six people using Apple's in mission critical government situations would disagree. But in general you do not see Apple computers in anything other than the education environment.
The point was that this isn't that big of a "win" for Microsoft. History has shown that what people use in school does not equate to sales in the post-education/i.e. work market. There are far more important factors that go into that equation, such as cost, does the solution work, etc. |

Ahh, but that's not true #12. I know of many people in the music industry using PCs.
Microsoft has had versions of Office for the Macintosh since the very beginning. You did realize that the first version of Excel was actually for the Mac, didn't you? It most certainly wasn't done in response to any supposed threat from Linux. (Besides Mac users would never turn to Linux as they can't figure out how a CLI works) If you don't know what you are talking about, then keep quiet. It will save on the signal to noise ratio. |
