Microsoft upgrade knocks out 80,000 government PCs | |

Some 80,000 computers at the Department for Work and Pensions went down during 'a routine software upgrade' of its Microsoft machines this week Staff at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) were unable to use their PCs this week after a routine software upgrade knocked out 80 percent of the PC in the sprawling department, which numbers some 100,000 employees. "We had problems with a routine software upgrade affecting desktop PCs," said a DWP spokesperson on Friday. "There have been delays with dealing with new or amended claims because many staff have not been able to access their systems. We have been working overnight with our suppliers to resolve the PC problems and nearly all users can now access their business systems." | ||

Six PC's were upgraded and 60,000 more suddenly BSOD'd? I doubt it. I think this article is a huge exxaggeration.
This brings to mind how much of my life I've wasted trying to fix open source software bugs to get a Linux desktop working the way I want it. Since I blew away that partition and stuck with XP, my life has been much happier. But also more boring. Bah, life is full of tradeoffs. |

Parkker, you missed the point. I was referring to the time you explained to us your method of testing service packs ---> Install it on your notebook and if it seems to work fine after the first reboot.. ok roll it out
I think a few people got a laugh out of your rigurous testing procedures back then if i remember correctly :) |

| This upgrade problem is just another example of an IT guy who knows everything and doesn't need to read up. |
