In his state of the industry keynote speech at this year's COMDEX Fall 2001, Bill Gates set out his vision for a digital decade that will revolutionize the way companies do business, and how people around the world communicate, learn, and are entertained. Gates also announced to attendees that the Beta 3 release of Windows .NET Server is imminent. Available at 56 kbps and 256 kbps. | ||

Windows XP is meant for "clients", as in home users and workstations.
Windows.NET Server is the next generation of Microsoft server OS's, which among many other things, include the .NET Framework. |

#9 - While I see great potential for Web Services and their use on the desktop, I think a bigger goal for Microsoft with Windows.NET Server is the b2b web services market.
The workstation/home PC will continue to be a stand alone machine (aka, NOT a Sun-like network PC thingy) for a long time to come. |

Question -- Will there also be a .NET Back Office Server and/org .NET Small Business Server? Or will those of us at smaller companies be forced to buy each piece seperatly from now on?

#11 - There will be 4 versions of .NET Server.
1.) Web Server Edition (for small scale web serving solutions.) 2.) Server (Normal server, just like in 2k) 3.) Adv Server (same deal) 4.) Datacenter (yup...) |

The Small Business Server has been incredibly popular, and I doubt they would back away from that.

It would if it was a Linux server! That's right, there'd be a real nice $500 HP scanjet attached right to the back of the Linux server.
But of course it wouldn't work. No software or drivers. But that's ok, the fact that it doesn't work means nobody uses the server, and it can gain an impressive uptime of 412 years! :-) |
