I've used Opera on and off for a few years now, but I've never been very impressed by it. While beta 1 is pretty neat looking, and has a few cool features I wish IE had, IE is still by browser of choice.
I don't notice any speed improvements (or differences, for that matter) over IE 6, but that may be because I have a 1.2Ghz Athlon.
As far as standards support, while Opera does have good adherence, it is not better than IE 6. There are a few small bugs in IE 6's implementation of CSS 1.0, but other than that, it is 100% compliant with CSS level 1, DOM level 1, SMIL 2.0, and excellent XML support. It also has a much more robust system for programmatic interface with both IE (via COM) and the content that is rendered (via handy DOM extensions).
VERY few people who actually develop web applications would disagree that writing them in a world where everybody used IE would make their lives MUCH easier. (Yes, more so than in a world ruled by Netscape.) I used to work for an e-learning company that developed custom software for delivery on CD and over the web, and nearly all of our QA and bug fixes were taken up by fixing Netscape issues. We never tried to support Opera, as basically nobody uses it.
