Microsoft’s next move in the Windows vs. Linux battle | |

Are you convinced that Windows environments are less expensive to own and operate than Linux computers? Martin Taylor, the manager behind Microsoft’s anti-Linux strategy, believes the company’s Get The Facts marketing campaign – along with a bunch of one-on-one meetings with customers – has effectively muted the old argument that Linux is cheaper than Windows just because the open-source OS can be downloaded for free. Going forward, Taylor plans to put more emphasis on how Windows compares to Linux when used for specific purposes, or what he calls “scenario stacks.” | ||

Of course Microsoft is a lot cheaper and better then anything from a major Linux distributor.
Look at the cost of IBM, Novell, and Redhat for equivalent solutions. Linux is at least twice the cost of Windows out of the box, not to mention support and the myriad costs of open sores security problems. Independant security analysts are now realizing that open sores security is a joke. |

gentlemen
ms is in the business of selling software (everything else they do is secondary and inconsequential). linux is not. ms can promote its products in ways linux cannot. linux has the power of being free. this is a very hard argument to overcome. as linux becomes more common and the general public becomes more computer literate, the advantages of ms begin to fade. ms has the upper hand now it is more compatible and generally simpler to use. this was apple’s advantage over ms once. it may not always be so. ms needs to develop compelling products. otherwise linux will surely supplant it in time. the future is innovation, innovation, innovation. (not sales tactics). |

...why rely on debatable spin...
Last I checked, TCO is a fact. Try it sometime. I will not argue that there are compelling reasons for Linux. I also want to buy a motorcycle to and from my job. The fact that it rains 80% of the year doesn't make that justification any good either. |

| Didn't realize there was a battle. I thought Linux was the equivalent of toilet paper at Microsoft. |
