A German financial magazine, WirtschaftsWoche, reported Wednesday that Bill Gates said he was interested in buying video game giant Nintendo.
Many Web sites and several news services picked up the report, and Microsoft Corp.'s public relations team shifted swiftly into gear for damage control and denial. Its corporate statement was that Microsoft did not comment on "rumors or speculation."
Beyond that, the Microsoft view was clearly that the reported comments were out of context. The remark attributed to Gates was made during an informal cocktail reception after Microsoft's yearly financial analysts' meeting recently at the company's Redmond headquarters.
