Rejuvenated Microsoft Gives Software Rivals Shivers | |

Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O executives may be breathing a little easier after the software giant reached an antitrust settlement with the U.S. government, but the deal left its rivals on edge. "A settlement on Microsoft probably has a little bit of an overhang effect on the rest of the industry," Goldman Sachs analyst Thomas Berquist said. "It means that all the rest of the competitors have to dig in a little harder to fight against a unified Microsoft." Rivals including Sun Microsystems Inc. SUNW.O, AOL Time Warner Inc. AOL.N and RealNetworks Inc. RNWK.O, said the remedies would not prevent the software giant from abusing its monopoly power in the future. | ||

On a site note, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer had salaries of $430,000 (630,000 with bonus) and $420,000 (620,000 with bonus), respectively.
Compare that with Larry Ellison's $3.75 million, or Scott McNealy's $4.87 million - I think it's fairly obvious which companies are a little more top heavy than others. It makes it especially funny since both Sun and Oracle aren't exactly doing well, and Microsoft - while not as strong as it once was - is still an extremely profitable company. All these numbers are for fiscal 1999. |

:-) I couldn't find the numbers for 2000 or 2001, and that's probably why. |

| #8 - Oh, by the way, can you post where you got your numbers from? A bonus of $665k is quite a bit, compared with an average bonus of $200k for all years previous. |
