Microsoft's brand-new version of Office for Mac OS X has been highly praised in reviews, but for many users it can't hold a candle to the 13-year-old Word 5.1. Released in October 1991, Word 5.1 is for many the apex of Microsoft software. To fans, Word 5.1 approached perfection: It struck the ideal balance between powerful features and ease of use. While it was simple enough for school kids to use, it facilitated the most complex publishing projects. | ||

Hey 'Wired', isn't it about time you ran your bi-yearly "Microsoft is dead!' cover story.
I had a budy with a poster of all the Wired covers from 2003 back and about every 6-8th one was a cover about how MS was dead, or Windows would be gone in 2 years, etc, etc. |

For light-to-medium Word Processing on the Mac there was a product called Write Now that was really awesome.
It didn't have every feature in the book (though it was quite capable), but what it was astonishing at is SPEED. Fastest at the time, and faster than anything I've seen to date, short of a text-only editor. That's what you get when you put together a few programmers who know how to write (properly) in 100% assembly lanquage, which is what Write Now was. I'd never want to program it, but it sure was nice from a user standpoint :) -Larry |
