Microsoft Offers Virtual Server 2005 Release Candidate | |

Microsoft Corp. on Monday released the Release Candidate for its Virtual Server 2005 software and announced that the product would ship by the end of the year in two versions: an Enterprise Edition and a Standard Edition. While the features remain the same across the two product versions, the Standard Edition will support up to four processors while the Enterprise Edition will support up to 32 physical processors. | ||

I've never actually read about this software, so this is a VMWare-like product? Doesn't that, then, compete against Virtual PC? The only difference being VS allows concurrant OSes to run and VPC only lets you do one?
If that's the case, I see no reason for VPC unless pricing is the only issue at stake. |

This is competition to VMWare's server product. GSX server I think. ESX runs on a custom Linux kernel, but what is cool about that is you can also virtualize multi-server configurations,
I've been using VMWare workstation at home to virtualize servers. I'm on the beta list for this, so I'll be giving this a try in the next week on a second machine I have. |

I have the RC of this installed.. we use vmware ESX here. MS's product, at the very best only competes with Vmware's GSX and in my opinion doesn't equal it yet... unless it's going to be priced well below that of GSX.
But you know for a version 1.0\1.1 (if you count 2004) ms product it's pretty well done. When they have a product like esx and surrounding management tools like vmware I'll take another look, untill then vmware still owns this market. | #14 I see no reason why it wouldn't be priced well below that of VMWare, the VirtualPC is significantly cheaper than VMWare. |
