Microsoft's Group Senior Manager for the Xbox in Japan, Masahiro Koide, has been discussing the success of the Xbox console in that territory with the US press. The Xbox has sold 400,000 units in the territory since its launch in February 2002 - the same figure that Koide says Grand Theft Auto has sold in Japan, as well as the 3DO console that launched there back in the nineties.
Koide's point is obviously that no matter how worthy of success the object, Western products will always have trouble convincing Japanese punters.
