SINGAPORE--These days, any abnormal behavior in your PC or server will likely be blamed on that ubiquitous "bug in the system." Sadly, the never-ending task of downloading patches only seem to delay the inevitable, as new security holes--in Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) software, for example--are still being discovered. The problem appears more pronounced for Microsoft operating systems, as the software giant controls over 90 percent of the global operating systems and desktop productivity software markets. | ||

Interesting. I started to subscribe to RedHat's security bulletins and I've received like 8 of them in the past week alone.
I think in that same time I've seen one from Microsoft. There was an article in another online magazine that pointed out if you tally up the bulletins released to BUGTRAQ, RedHat Linux is in first place and exceeds Microsoft Windows 2000 by a fair amount. |

Actually no #2... the article pointed out that there have been more vulnerabilities in specific Linux distributions than with Windows 2000 itself.
They require registration, but it's interesting: http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?id=r00220010917mco01.htm&_requestid=88211 RedHat 7.0 has had 28 vulnerabilities posted, Windows 2000 has had 24. Which is the same as Solaris 7.0 and 8.0. Mandrake 7.2 was at the top with 33 announcements. And that's not even strictly comparable, because the Linux companies release distributions once a quarter, whereas Microsoft releases every two years or so. If you compare NT vulnerabilities against vulnerabilities found in every version of RedHat dating back to 1996 until 2000 when Win2k was released, you'd find RedHat Linux to be far more of a problem than NT. The point you are making is semi-valid. More people have been hit by the Windows vulnerabilities, but the reason is because far more people use Windows. If 95% of the cars on the road were made by Chevy... Chevy would be the predominant car involved in auto accidents. But you can't conclude from that statistic that Chevy makes a less safe car than Ford who only has 2% of the market. |

Ahh, but then you are relying upon security through obscurity in it's worst form, and we know that doesn't work.
Better yet if you are consulting for a company you should show them how to install IIS so that it's secure by default, and how to properly maintain it. Or even offer to do that for them, whatever. It's the lousy consultant who relies on obscurity, it's the good consultant who actually understands what needs to be done. |

Ahh, but #8... the only reason why Apache is secure by default is because it has no features. Once you start adding those features to make it flexible and useful, the flaws start showing up. So your last argument isn't very viable.
I think it's interesting how you confuse diversity with obscurity. The point being, if you do use Linux/Apache, you'd better know how to lock that down and make it secure. Of course if you went to that much trouble you wouldn't be having any problems with Win2k/IIS either. 50,000 Linux hosts infected with worms can't be wrong. |
