Microsoft Previews Next Version of Windows CE Device Platform | |

Today at electronicaUSA with the Embedded Systems Conference, Microsoft Corp. announced a Technology Preview Kit for Windows® CE 5.0, previously code-named "Macallan." Leveraging extensive feedback from customers, the final version of Microsoft® Windows CE 5.0 will focus on increasing developer productivity through a variety of feature enhancements including increased out-of-the-box hardware support, security enhancements, advanced multimedia capabilities and automated testing tools. The wide range of functionality will enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build more exciting and compelling devices and bring them to market more quickly. | ||

I wish they would focus instead on better reliability. Maybe it's the apps, but to me CE (PocketPC, in my case) feels like going back to Windows 98 in terms of stability.... |

Having owned many Palm and Pocket PC devices, I can say that Pocket PCs are unstable. I have had a Tungsten T2 for about 9 months and have never had to do a soft or hard reset. I have an IPAQ h2215 that has needed two resets over the last two months. I don't count the resets required by software updates (Palm had one I think, the h2215 had three). Both units run several of the same programs and, of course, have the same synced data from Outlook. My Toshiba E335 was about the same in reliability.
One of the most used computers at my house runs Windows 98 and needs fewer reboots than my Pocket PCs! I suspect that applications are the cause of instability, but the OS should be able to recover without locking up. |

| I have a Toshiba e740 (PPC 2002), and it requires soft resets more often than I think is necessary, and I don't use it heavily. In particular, the 802.11b wireless feature was really picky, almost always requiring a soft reset before use. But even without the wireless, it starts to act strange after a week or two--mysterious slowdowns, GUI glitches, settings not taking effect, etc. I still like it, but I wish it was on the same level as 2000/XP. |
