The Council of Better Business Bureaus has recommended that Apple Computer discontinue comparative performance claims regarding its Power Mac G5 desktop.
Acting on a tip from Apple rival Dell, the council's National Advertising Division (NAD) "determined that the evidence provided by Apple did not provide a reasonable basis for its broad unqualified claims that its Power Mac G5 is 'the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer' and that it 'edged out the competition on integer.'"

having actually used one a dual 2.0 GHz G5 I can honestly say that my 1.2 Athlon feels much faster in everything it does.
I wouldnt consider buying one if if they were not $3000.
And 10.3 sucks too... but at least they are starting to add features that XP had in 2001

The G5 is a nice computer. Very pretty. A good interface. An OK selection of software. But I don't like Macs for three major reasons:
1.) They're a LOT more expensive. For the same money I can build or buy a much, much faster and more decked out PC.
2.) They're a horrible platform for software development. Sorry, but objective C is not my idea of a good time. I love my .NET, and aside from the partial .NET implementation for BSD, the Mac has no .NET.
3.) Software. Yes, they do have most of what people want... Office, web browsers, etc. But it lacks quite a bit of the selection a PC has... especially in the games arena.
That's not to say that many people would be perfectly happy with a Mac... but I won't be.

#3...Isn't that the whole selling point for Apple...style over substance. They look pretty, but for performance and cost, a Windows machine beats it hands down. Not to mention the software availability (or lack there of).
Yes you can run a Windows emulator (and be even slower), but realistically, a PC beats an Apple any day of the week.
And you can't even use the "But the graphics programs are better on Apple"....Windows graphic editing software is at least the equal to a Mac's now...better if you consider the cost of the Mac....buy a pc that's much faster for the same money to do the graphics stuff.

I agree with #6. I use a 1.2GHz G4 and an Athlon XP 1800. The G4 feels faster than the Athlon in my experience. I couldn't figure out what #1 was talking about because it didn't seem to reflect my experience. The Athlon also seems to be getting slower and slower. That machine appears to be suffering from Windows Arthritis.
This debate has become so 1990s. I don't know why I always fall into it.

#7 - I was wondering the same thing, I'm on a 1ghz Mac and a Athlon 2100, the speed of the OS's are about equal on both, file searching etc being faster on the Mac, it's only in gaming and other parts that the Mac falls down (But thats the G4 not G5). Microsoft must know something about the PowerPC's too - otherwise choosing those over AMD and Intel for the Xbox wouldn't be such a great move accourding to all you guys.

"A Dell representative said in an e-mail: We "notified NAD because we felt there were some inaccuracies in Apple's advertisement and wanted to act on behalf of consumers in the marketplace who deserve accurate information on which to base their purchase decisions..."
Apart from the complete rubbish of DELL doing this for anyone other then themselves... honestly, how is this any different from all the other not-quite-but-almost accurate advertisments? And how is this different from the completely inaccurate advertisments?

The facts of the matter are that Power McIntosh computer sales fell last quarter by 10% from the year before and were off 17% from the year before that. The rest of the models are down as well, with the exception of the PowerBook. If it weren't for the PowerBook - I believe it is still running the older G4 CPU - Apple's profits, notwithstanding iPod and iTunes sales, would be in the toilet.
As it is, they are still losing market share to Wintel.
So, who cares, really, what they claim? The only ones that seem to care are already owners of the product. They aren't attracting new buyers to their offerings.
