No hard drive in Xbox 2, says M-Systems boss | |

Dov Moran, CEO of M-Systems, the company which has been contracted by Microsoft to provide flash memory storage for Xbox 2, has told an Israeli newspaper that the next-generation console will not have a hard disc drive. This is the first time that anyone connected with the development of the system has gone on record about the issue of the hard drive, although sources at Microsoft and key developers have told us that it was unlikely that a hard drive would be included in the console. | ||

| #3 The GameCube doesn't have a hard drive and they have linux running fairly well on it. It probably won't take long to get it running on the Xbox 2 because it will have more memory and speed than the GameCube. |

| I wonder if they will introduce two versions, or two separate products--a baseline Xbox with the flash storage, and a higher-end model with the hard drive for storing music, PVR use, photos, etc.--like a cross between an Xbox and a Media Center. Probably too early to say? |

| bluvg (#6), I have been thinking the same thing. I recall Microsoft saying they would probably integrate PVR features into the Xbox... it seems like it wouldn't do much good unless it had a hard drive. I think the problem there is that people who just want to play video games don't want to buy a 100 to 300 Gig hard drive that is important for PVR capabilities (you could get away with less, but I doubt they will). This way everybody gets what they want. |

My xbox has a mod chip and a 120 gig hard drive. Basically speaking my Xbox has become my entertainment center. It plays almost every music and video format, plus the hard drive is great for storing games and movies.
With that said I don't see how Microsoft can make the Xbox2 the center of the living room with out a very large harddrive. Clearly the gaming consoles are going the way of PVR/DVR/TiVO/Media Center/Storage Medium and any other buzz word that you can think of. How can they get there with under 100 gigs? I have 25 games, 15 movies, Survivor all star ( 7 episodes) , The Apprentice ( 7 episodes) and some adult content stored on 80 gigs. Hell I may need another 120 gigs. |

| Red: The already stated more advanced version of the XBox 2 (much like Sony is planning with the PSX) or offering a harddrive add-on. |
