Hmm, as I sit here : the sun is shining outside the win... piece of glass in a hole in the wall. I'm typing this message in a win... rectangular area of the screen with border and title bar on my Mac. wondering when I'll get the next person asking me when I'll have a wi... period of time to do another job. I can't help thinking that the US judge was right, and Microsoft are just using their usual tactic of sue the f**k out of anyone they don't like till they give in to bullying or go bust. | ||

#3 Which guy is an idiot? The writer of the story? The user who made the comment which this story links to? Or just every single person on the planet who dares to say anything even remotely negative about Microsoft? Or perhaps just everyone that disagrees with your opinion?
As far as I am aware, Michael only has a trademark out on "LindowsOS" and "Lindows.com" (and now "Lin---s.com") not "Lindows". Microsoft do not have a trademark on "WindowsOS"! From what I have read up about this case, Michael claims that when the term "Windows" was trademarked in the early 80's it was used as a generic term used in any windowing environment/graphical user interface and there is plenty of evidence to show that this was indeed the case, hell even the US Judge agreed (which I am suprised - I figured Microsoft would have made the right strategic spending (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobbying))! i.e. HIS main point being that the term "windows" should be looked at when the trademarked was asked for and granted, not today. But I'm sure there's absolutely nothing to this, I'm sure everyone who dares say anything must be an idiot right! This post was edited by chris_kabuki on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 22:49. |

"Lindows.com has submitted a substantial volume of evidence in support of the generic use of "windows" by the computer industry and the press in the early 1980s. This evidence ... raises significant questions about the genericness of the term even before Microsoft announced Windows in 1983." "While the court agrees that the Windows mark has acquired secondary meaning, no degree of secondary meaning will save a generic mark... no matter how much money or effort it pours into promoting the sale of the merchandise." I didn't say Michael was right or wrong. I mearly stated that given the evidence based on Michael's stance on this issue, the decision isn't that clear-cut! Which the judge has agreed with. Additionally, GEM was also demo'ed in November 1983 (same month Windows 1.0 was announced) and released the year after, still a year before Windows 1.0 was released! #11 "X-Windows and its precursors" You obviously missed the word "precursors", as an example of a precursor to X, have a look at the W Window System.
