Desktop Linux Share Overtaking Macintosh | |

Market researcher IDC expects to announce within weeks that Linux' PC market share in 2003 hit 3.2%, overtaking Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh software (as reported a few weeks ago it has fallen at 1.8%, for the first time). And the researcher expects Linux to capture 6% of this market by 2007. That's still tiny compared with Microsoft's 94% share. Desktop Linux hasn't had any appreciable effect on Microsoft's finances yet, but it could do damage if Linux manages to grab a 10% share of the market, say analysts. IDC estimates that desktop Windows' share will shrink slightly, to 92% in 2007 as Linux' share doubles. The first big question though is how all this will have an effect to Apple's business. | ||

An article regaling the "triumph" of Linux without a mention of the 14,000 workstations in Munich! What is the world of tech journalism coming to?
The shock of it all! lol By the way, there is an article quoting the IDC "dreams" in Business Week. There, it also highlights a doctor with 160 workstation base that only spent $400,000 to go to Linux. That's only $2500 a workstation! I guess that's what the mean by, "free as in beer!" lol |

Then lets not forget than a linux distro such as Fedora includes mulitiple software packages for any one thing. ie: at least 3 office packages, multiple email clients, text editors and tons of other things. Then we must also consider that instead of spending months or years between releases, OSS typically has point releases weekly that are reported on and tested by the public. MS and other companies are able to hide all the issues they find that never make it to the public. Are you mentally challenged? I'm really beginning to wonder. This article is about the market share of desktops (i.e. not servers). You just pointed out that RedHat sold 7,000 "annual subscriptions for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux family of technologies ". Now tell me, how many desktops are going to be running RedHat Enterprise? Or is it perhaps more likely that RedHat Enterprise is going to be used on servers? That's not to say that it can't or isn't be used on the desktop, but it is far more likely to be used on a server. Great way to back up your point Einstein! Have you even given any thought to the small possibility of users installing Linux WITHOUT paying for it or WITHOUT buying annual subscriptions? I mean it's not as if you can just download Linux distro's off the net, and it's not as if you can't do to a newsagent and buy a magazine with several distro's on it. How do we accurately count the number of users who will buy a computer pre-loaded with Windows and then install Linux on it? I'm not saying Linux's desktop market share is beating Mac's, in fact I doubt it is, but the simple fact remains that it is hard to define the number of users running Linux, Google's ZeitGeist is one way but is it the most accurate way? Who knows! It's much easier to count the number of Mac or Windows licenses sold. |
