Use a blogging engine to run the site.
Include full info in your RSS, not just the AW link.
Include all comments in your RSS via commentRSS, so I can read them in my aggregator.
Before you object on the basis that you can't do an ad driven site when the content spews out via RSS, you can embed ads in RSS feeds.
Make the site skinnable for those who visit via the browser.
Notify users visually that there are new articles/comments since their last visit.
Display icon that a post has been modded (not sure where...). User can click (or perma link to it in the profile) to see the post, and a reason why it was modded. This allows the user to know what was offensive and, since the offending version is stored, moderators can see it in case there is a question about why it was modded. Also store who modded it, but this doesn't need to be displayed to the user.
Don't let users edit posts after moderators mod them.
Allow users to change their usernames. Perhaps put some icon by the name to indicate it has recently change (a la ebay).
Add support for spell check. dasBlog does this for blog entries (not comments) via ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com/).
Prevent users from posting certain offensive words. Don't replace them with asterics or other words (like in the forums). Simply prevent the post from being submitted until it is clean. Yes there are ways to defeat this, but this will prevent accidental swearing that has caused some posts to be modded.
Provide aliases for all items - news submissions, problems with content, problems with users, general stuff, etc. Optionally, provide a form to submit issues. This form will send the email to the appropriate addresses.
Make log files - hits, page views, unique users, referal logs, user agents, etc. available. Yes, you'd have to pretty it up somehwat, but it'd be great info to see.
Ability to ignore users (like squelch in many online games). Yes, we could just ignore them on our own, but I'd like to not have to accidentally read them either.
Ability to ignore content from newsources. Same justification as above.
Decrease the size of the pages. The current pages are too heavy.
