Thanks Jeff! Updated: Microsoft has finally released the Release Candidate 1 of Visual Studio .NET. MSDN Professional and Universal Subscribers can download this new beta version right now. The Visual Studio .NET Release Candidate is recommended for users who have not installed Beta 2, or users previewing the .NET Compact Framework and Smart Device Extensions. Users of Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 may install the Release Candidate; however, the Release Candidate contains fewer features (this is the Professional Edition whereas Beta 2 is the Enterprise Edition), and a time bomb will prevent usage of the Release Candidate after February 28, 2002. Beta 2 users will probably choose to wait for the final release of Visual Studio .NET, scheduled for late in the fourth quarter 2001. | ||

Agreed #1.
I was forced to use a Linux box running GNOME the other day to browse the web. *ick* I don't understand why, but it appears to have a large amount of sluggishness with the keyboard and mouse response. Makes it very difficult to want to use. |

| True, #7. Concept and Theory should be the main focus of most comp-sci classes, but I see no reason not to teach it via .NET. I'm not saying that it should only be taught via .NET, tho. My school uses Pascal, Java (yuck!), C/C++ etc to teach different conecpts. Now, they're starting VB as well (whoopty doo...), but I have to admit, having a class that uses .NET as a teaching tool will more than likely be very beneficial in the future, especially in relation to ASP.NET and C#. |

I imagine site licenses for academic versions of VisualStudio.NET will not be that expensive. VS6 pro at my school was around $250. I doubt though that .NET will change universities that much. In my experience most CS proessors aren't fans of Microsoft, other wise Visual C++ would be taught not standard C++.
