Apple Reports First Quarter Results - Revenue Increases 36 Percent Year-Over-Year | |

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2004 first quarter ended December 27, 2003. For the quarter, the Company posted a net profit of $63 million, or $.17 per diluted share. These results compare to a net loss of $8 million, or $.02 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue for the quarter reached a four-year high of $2.006 billion, up 36 percent from the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 26.7 percent, down from 27.6 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 44 percent of the quarter’s revenue. The quarter’s results include an after-tax investment gain of $3 million which increased earnings per diluted share by $.01. Apple shipped 829 thousand Macintosh® units during the quarter, up 12 percent from the year-ago quarter, as well as 733 thousand iPod® units, up 235 percent from the year-ago quarter. | ||

Why should Apple have to match EVERY PC manufacturer?
Dell and HP trade position at #1 with around 16%, IBM has 6%... Toshiba, eMachine, and Gateway are neglibly ahead of Apple. Just ONE MORE quarter like Gateway's last, and they'll be below Apple. I would say it's rather incredible that they are the 6th or 7th largest PC manufacturer when their system has 5% or less of the PC market. That means Apple performs better than the manufacturers of 55% of the world's PCs. |

Not to mention:
"In 2000, 140.2 million PCs left factories and accounted for an estimated $226 billion in value, or revenue, in the market, said Roger Kay, an analyst with IDC. In 2003, a record 152.6 million PCs were shipped, but they carried an estimated value of $175 billion, a $51 billion decline. In fact, the 136.7 million PCs shipped in 2002 probably accounted for $175 billion in value, meaning that in dollar terms the past two years have been close to equal." ...which isn't the case in the Mac market. I'd say that Apple is a healthier PC manufacturer than Toshiba, eMachines, and Gateway which means only three companies in the world are better at manufacturing and selling PCs. |

.... and the $.99 store sells more because products are cheaply made.... who comes to mind? emachines? walmart computers? give me a break # 1
