We are introducing a new member of the iPod family today to go after these guys It's the iPodmini! Shows a picture of it next to the iPod. It's the size of a business card and 1/2 an inch think. It has 4GBs of storage and is a rather massive $249. They are in gold, blue, pink and green, aluminum. It's smaller. But it's the same interface, same wheel and everything. It has the four buttons on the outside of the scroll wheel. Shows a picture of it next to the iPod. It's smaller. But it's the same interface, same wheel and everything. You boys don't get it, do you? Apple creates 3 of the 5 top mp3 players (ALL mp3 players) on the market with the HD iPod.
The other two are flash-based players that, yes, are cheaper... They sell for $140, but only offer 128 MB, not 4 GB.
Rio just launched a new Nitrus that is 4 GB... Gues how much? $249. And it's uglier, larger, and has a crappy interface.
I also wager that this drops in price in 6 months time. Hell, just because of the size I'm considering purchasing one even though I want to upgrade my 10 GB to a 40 GB one.
Obviously, you guys are complete suckers... Hanging around a Windows site to get Mac updates the second they happen at MacWorld... But, naw, naw, you guys don't give a hoot... you don't want one...
Right.

I'll second that, its far too high a price, this is a bad move on Apple's part i think, I know the parts are costly, but its too high for the group of people they are aiming it at.

Soda give them a break - they've actually come from a link from one of the biggest Mac sites. http://www.macsurfer.com/
I agree with them, its too expensive, just like the Rio one is - it should have been cheaper.

I don't care where they're from...
But I disagree entirely...
They cannot produce enough HD iPods now... They are out of stock at many stores, some countries can't get them at all, Apple no longer can offer refurbished/closeout iPods because they've been bought.
This will take pressure off of Apple's ability to produce HD-based iPods. The iPod still kills any other HD-based mp3 player and will have nothing to fear for sometime. There is plenty of room to reduce prices/expand capacity at a later time.
4 GB Flash is not cheap, but this player is actually cheaper and better than most HD players from other manufacturers (if smaller capacity). However, beating other HD players on features, style, size, price, etc... with a Flash player means Apple further separates themselves from other HD players and gets their Flash player on the board.
At some point Apple will be able to reduce the cost... probably rather soon, but they will not be able to push the capacity much anytime soon. I would expect to see this move from $250 to $200 to $150 over the next year. I doubt that means that in the meantime they won't sell. I'm sure these will have the same problem. Apple will not be able to keep pace.
The pricing situation works perfectly. This can be more desirable than some HD players from others because people do not need the capacity. It does not cannabalize the larger iPod because some people will decide to opt up for the larger capacity. Some people like me want and will buy even larger capacity HD iPods, etc...
They can lower the price over time and make a huge dent in the Flash market that is still selling 128 MB players for $150.
I want a $600 XServe, but you can't criticize Apple for not giving you exactly what you want. You've got to consider the broader desirability of these products for many different consumers (I just had a guy come up to me say he wants to buy an iPod but he thinks they're slightly too expensive, too big a capacity... and he happens to be a runner, climber, athletic.... do you think he'll buy this?)... and also consider how it fits into Apple's product matrix, where they want to take it, etc....

Hey, moron, whatever it is, the point is: it is the size of a smaller flash player. People buy the smaller flash players because of size and their capacity needs. These will sell.
Aesthetically, I'd rather slip a mini iPod in my pocket rather than jamming the full iPod in a pocket with keys are having it clipped to my belt in its sleeve.

Can't say I've ever had to jam that larger ipod into a pocket, it's not exactly big anyway, and I'd never put it in with anything else as they scratch far too easily anyway! But in sensible terms, I can't see many people buying one when for just $50 more you can get 3x the space for music. I have to say I don't like the look of them bar the colours either, I guess I just expected more than we've got for that price.

"Can't say I've ever had to jam that larger ipod into a pocket, it's not exactly big anyway..."
Byron, you really think an iPod fits comfortably in your pocket? You can sit down that way too?
"I'd never put it in with anything else as they scratch far too easily anyway!"
Exactly, but I always have keys in one pocket, a cellphone in the other, maybe change, a lighter, etc...
I end up using the sleeve all the time. And I think sleeves/holsters look moronic and dorky. This is much better.
I really like the looks of these. Just not sure if I could tolerate the smaller display and button controls.

I've been using Macs since 86; when did they ever plan on getting Macs on every desktop?
People may have missed it, but Apple probably slowly and quietly started the next new app revolution: home consumer music production... if you hadn't noticed.

It's than the iPod mini yeah, but its not attractive in my view, its a good try though, and when trying it the interface is not good at all. Easy to make misjudged comparisons without having both in hand though isn't it parker.

parker, bringing this up a week after I set you straight in the Windows forums?
Come on....
The Nitrus is rather a bit larger than the mini by volume. 17% LARGER.
It is wider and fatter -- the dimensions that matter when slipping something in your pocket. I'd rather slide a thinner, flatter device into my pocket than something that looks like a big wad of clay with a joystick sticking out of it.
Half the weight: which is less than .9 ozes and is based on the much smaller 1.5GB model (we don't know how much the 4GB model weighs yet). Which is a small gulp of soda... oooh, that weighs me down so much!
