New CompuServe May Ship Without IE | |

AOL Time Warner on Thursday confirmed Gecko sightings in test versions of CompuServe 7, a sign that the technology could replace Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the online service's default Web browser. The tests will allow the media giant to determine whether the upcoming CompuServe version will come packaged with browser technology from the company's own Netscape Communications unit. CompuServe, like the America Online flagship service, uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer as its default browser. If CompuServe 7 comes packaged with Gecko, it could be one step toward rekindling the Web browser wars from the late '90s. Once the hands-down leader of browser technology, Netscape Communications, now a division of AOL, has let its browser slip into the middle of the pack. Microsoft, on the other hand, has jumped ahead, but its means of gaining market share from Netscape brought Justice Department scrutiny for monopolistic behavior. | ||

| To say that Mozilla or Netscape follow standards perfectly is the biggest drivel I have ever heard. People complain about MS leveraging their monopoly but does anyone remember all of those Netscape specific tags that only worked in Netscape? THey pioneered the idea. And now they are the champions of standards . . . Please. . . Netscape 6.1 is better on the standards front but they still have a loooooong way to go before its anywhere close to IE. 4 years for something IE has had done for 3. If that isn't an advertisement for Microsoft's development team I don't know what is. They supposedly have all of these people working on this thing and still they can't rival Internet Explorer. |

| Never said there was anything wrong with AOL. But if they include the Netscape tech in their product I will. As a web deveolper I hate having to hack my code so it looks right with Netscape. Its a crummy product. Do what you will with AOL makes no difference to me, I don't use it. |

First off nothing is perfect. Netscape is getting better.
I write webpages and for the most part Netscape has always given me headaches. Even 6.0. Constant crashes, very bizarre rendering and sucky speed. 6.1 fixed a lot of that. However problems still remain. I have a table that I apply a style to make it centered. I then insert another table into this table and I would expect it to be centered. Doesn't work in Netscape 6.1. I use this on all of my nav links and it looks ok in Netscape but its still really annoying. Why should I have to put in a non breaking space. Shouldn't the web browser know by my td tag that this is a table cell. Come on . . . What's so difficult about making the browser work right in the first place? The big problem remains though that around the web Netscape 4.x is still way more prevalent then 6. 6 is a niche category so as a web designer you still have to support it. That is why I hate Netscape and as a web developer I will not use their products. |

Netscape 4.x and earlier. Its good technology but you are lmited by what browsers understand CSS. Netscape being the limiting factor here again. Check out that page with Netscape Communicator. It doesn't apply the CSS formatting.
Again why I hate Netscape. Look at that page in IE and Netscape 6. Now resize the browser. Notice how in IE it contracts gracefully and in Netscape it doesn't compress all of the way. Now here is the exact same standard of CSS2 and it behaves differently in the two browsers. They both look right but IE's behavior as far as scaling in my opinion is a better implementation. I can't do this because I want my Netscape users to be able to see some formatting applied. Again thats why I hate Netscape. Netscape 4.x the bane of the web. |

| Quite an article #41. A comment on standards compliancy - is it better for to make a standards compliant product or to give the client what they want? I'll be most non-web developers don't care at all what standards are supported by which browser. I think they want the sites they visit to look good. As a developer, I say if the standard doesn't do what I want then we should extend the standard (or replace it) to do what we need. Being standards compliant is not the be all end all thing (in the world of HTML, at least), providing a platform for web development is the be all end all. |
