Windows Longhaul? Longhorn could be 2008, says Gartner
Time: 14:38 EST/19:38 GMT | News Source: The Register | Posted By: Todd Richardson

Longhorn in 2005 seems definitely off the agenda, and while it might ship in 2006, it could be delayed until 2008 or 2009, according to Gartner. According to a report of the Gartner Data Center Conference in Information Week, Gartner research VP Tom Bittman puts the likely release window between late 2006 and mid-2008.

Is this guy speaking about the Desktop or Server edition? Even if it was the latter is too far away. IMO of course

According to Scoble, he's talking about the server version.

I'd rather wait till 2010 and get a kickass secure OS, then some buggy ME horsecrap.

I've seen the roadmaps and I've talked with the dev teams, they're not worried about the timeline because they want to, for once and for all, produce a product so good security wise, feature wise, and powerwise that we will wonder how we ever worked with XP. Try to imagine an OS fully implementing a 3d interface, fully scaling on a terabyte harddrive, and seamlessly interacting with applications all across the internet(so that you don't even know you're not running it locally). When the get it right(and they will), its going to be a radically new infastructure.

For all the doomsayers of Microsoft, I have one point and a question.
1)Compounding interest. Microsoft isn't going away anytime soon, its called the time value of money, and they can finally make this release be driven by quality not some bs time schedule.

2) What happens if Microsoft gets security right, like they've gotten features right?

fast_math - Huh?

"In order for me to look at windows as a good server platform it would have to be rebuilt
and TESTED then after a year of passing DOCUMENTED tests, then maybe I'd switch, maybe. "

So what are you using now? Or are you just staying off the internet completely because of unwarranted fears towards computers?

Wheres the innovation? certainly not at the core.
Sure, maybe thier api's have been redesigned, I doubt it though.
More likely just bloat added to the old ones.

To make these statements would suggest that you've never read (or comprehended) any documentation for any version of Windows after 95 or any of the NT line, including, and especially any of the Longhorn documentation that exists today. With the actual PDC sessions freely available online, Longhorn SDK documentation, technical blogs from the development teams, and other outlets like MSR, multiple resources on MSDN (MSDN TV, .NET Show, technical articles, etc), and third-party blogs, there is little reason to be so uninformed with the necessary information so readily available.

New IP Stack (unifying IPv4 and IPv6 and built on managed code)

New commandline -- MSH -- (managed code, extensible, powerful, and even providing command aliases for n*x folks, though user customizable for whatever your favorite platform)

New Storage layer and APIs (WinFS, Transactional NTFS, synchronization, extensible item types based on schema, etc.) built on managed code.

New Presentation layer (integrated 3D, media, vector graphics, enhanced text rendering, more extensible, powerful, scalable) built on managed code.

Natural UI APIs (speech, handwriting, natural language queries, etc.) built on managed code.

ClickOnce (easy, secure, app deployment, installation/uninstallation) built on managed code.

Secure Execution Environment (extension of .NETs code-access security -- applications ability to run fully or at all is based on the level of trust given by the user or administrator).

New driver model for GPUs and other devices.

NGSCB (secure hardware/software implementation for building applications that can't be spoofed of co-opted, and whose data is secure from key loggers, screen scrapers, and other exploits).

Plenty of other things that combined, likely make up much more work for MS than the original design and implementation of NT. Many of these technologies go back 5 to 10 years, and have been written and rewritten several times (including recently) for better performance, security, and usability. And with so much emphasis upon managed code, and the majority of unmanaged code relegated to the kernel and kernel- level components (and pushed out further in future releases), Longhorn will likely have the smallest attack surface of any available networked, general purpose OS.

"I'd rather wait till 2010 and get a kickass secure OS, then some buggy ME horsecrap. "

Well, we already tried that. Look how long it took to get from Windows 98 (ME was never an OS as far as I'm concerned) to XP.

It didn't help much.

TL,
What's your beef with XP? Its stable and based on NT technologies.

All I'm saying is that XP can stay the course, until MS can get the next OS right.

I'm not looking for some new crazy features pushed out quickly, instead I'm hoping to wait(and wait I will) for new awesome security and powerful features.

Didn't Billy G, say something about more money was beeing spent on LH than it cost to put a man on the moon. So going by that, it took a decade to get a man on the moon and it was a success. Therefore, I'll easily wait a decade for a successful OS.

#6 "Gartner is just trying to suck up to the Linux crowd."

You didn't seem to have any issues with THIS (http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=21273&Group=1) Gartner report... maybe because that one was positive towards Microsoft. Funny that. Wake up and realise that Gartner will write anything they are paid to write, they will write pro-Microsoft, anti-Microsoft, pro-Linux, anti-Linux and pro- and anti- everything else, even on a week to week basis!

#13 NT does *NOT* stand for New Technology, and it never has. It stands for N-TEN, the i860 chip that NT was being tested on.

"Originally, we were targeting NT to the Intel i860 (code-named 'N-Ten)', a RISC processor that was horribly behind schedule. Because we didn't have any i860 machines in-house to test on, we used an i860 simulator. That's why we called it NT, because it worked on the 'N-Ten.'" - Mark Lucovsky, Distinguished Engineer, Windows Server Architect

#15 - I bought server 2003, its junk.

Why is it junk?

I love Win2k3 Server. We have 2 Dell PowerEdge 2650's (dual Zeon 2.8Ghz, 1.5GB of ram) running Win2k3 Server. These two servers handle well over 10 million HTTP requests a day. We're typically doing around 100 requests per second, but occasionaly we see it spike to over 1,000 during certain hours. We average 20Mb/sec of traffic.

Again, this is just 2 servers using network load balancing. No sepcial hardware. Just a firewall, a couple of switches, and the two servers. That's a little under $10,000 worth of equipment, including the cost of Windows.

We haven't had a single second of down time. We haven't dropped a single request. Hell, aside from cleaning out the logs every couple of weeks (we generate upwards of 5GB of logs a day), we don't touch the servers.

These HTTP requests aren't simply static HTML pages either. It's an ASP.NET application that does some decent processing. Yet, even with just two servers, we rarely see the CPUs spike about 25%. A lot of this, I'm sure, is due to how I coded the ASP.NET app... but IIS 6 is just incredible at handling load.

So, how, exactly, is Win2k3 junk?

8MB partition:

You mean they hide a whole 8MB? I think thats worth throwing a fit about! Really, with 120,000MB hard drives for $80 these days...do the fast_math and see what thats worth to you? If your down to needing that 8mb for anything, your hard drive is too small. And, they just put it there for the fun of it? Look deeper, its there for a reason. Hint: Why does ME+ boot faster then earlier OS's?

You want what you would reccomend:

Its not a "trial" meaning you get 1/2 the functions, it means it only works for so many days. A trial version isnt going to run better then a full version. You need to look at logistics, and rethink how YOU do business.

I know people like you, ones who will die saying Windows98 is better then XP. You fail to see the advances in technology, and how they are better and instead hold steadfast in shouting about 8MB of hard drive space.

Don't feed the trolls, guys. And, don't bother responding to Register articles. Perhaps if we stop responding to them, AW will stop posting links to them. We don't need to reinforce bad behavior.

Oh, my bad, didnt notice it was a Register article. All earlier comments are null and void.

Problem is, becker, not you, not anyone else here, knows whether or not Longhorn is going to make 2005 or 2006. That was the original issue. The fact is: any BS about a release date is from Microsoft and Microsoft alone. They've had about 20 different people and 2nd and 3rd party sources already float dates that have ranged from 2003 to 2006.... So... come on, and chill with the retarded: "I stand for truth above all...." crap.

#15 By 135 (208.186.90.91) at 12/15/2003 9:27:50 PM
fast_math(troll) - "WPA, integrated IE6, graphocs acceleration is disabled by default "

Huh? You're complaining about graphics acceleration being turned off by default on a Server product? And the integrated IE6 is configured in a highly secure manner, and you are complaining about that?

My head is about to explode.

"I have a MORAL STANDARD to my clients. "

Then you ought to give me their names and numbers so I can fix all the damage you are doing them.
