Microsoft is prepping Windows XP Service Pack 2 to be released into beta testing within a week, sources said. Service Pack 2, or SP2, expected to be delivered in finished form during the first half of 2004, is considered a significant Windows update because it offers enhanced security features and rolls up all the security patches and updates that have been released since the last service pack shipped in September 2002. | ||

| The testing periods for service packs that have had no major new technology have lasted more than six months. I know that a few of the Windows 2000 service packs lasted more than six months and were basically just patches. |

| I have a feeling that this SP is going to cause a lot of negative attention (particularly from the media, since negative attention attracts readers/listeners/viewers) when it comes out due to the problems that people will have when they install it because they aren't aware of the implications. The firewall turned on by default will cause a lot of issues and break some applications. Hopefully there will also be some detection to see if another firewall is already present... a lot of XP boxes I've seen ship with a McAfee or Norton firewall preinstalled. |
