Microsoft shifts from .Net, web focus | |

The most interesting story from Microsoft's recent Professional Developers Conference wasn't the vendor's future Longhorn operating system, but rather, Microsoft's shift away from two preoccupations of its recent past: .Net and web services. Microsoft isn't abandoning the .Net Framework or web services standards in its development, hosting and interoperability environments. The .Net Common Language Runtime (CLR), .Net class libraries and growing WS-* standard suite are still expected to be core features of the future Longhorn client and server releases. But the vendor has distanced itself from the terms .Net and web services and has incorporated these frameworks in a broader-umbrella architecture associated with Longhorn. This uber-framework, called WinFX, refers to the new APIs and component model underlying the new operating system. WinFX, like .Net, will be supported on prior Windows operating systems through downloadable components. | ||

lol, WinFX is .NET. If any OS deserves the name Windows .NET it will be Longhorn. Microsoft might not use the term ".NET" as often as they used to, but it is still very much at the heart of every product that they've announced.
This article makes about as much sense as saying a few years ago that Microsoft was distancing itself from COM, because of all the talk of ActiveX...even though COM and ActiveX are the same thing. Also, I wonder what the "Indigo" team thinks of the assessment that Microsoft is shifting away from a services focus. I'm guessing ChrisAn and DBox would get a laugh out of this. |

Has he not read or seen anything from Bill Gates lately? Bill has mentioned web services and .NET/managed code in almost every speech or interview he's given recently. "WinFX, like .Net, will be supported on prior Windows operating systems through downloadable components." As BobSmith said, WinFX is .NET. And, though the article goes on to mainly discuss Indigo, it is only part of WinFX. The full WinFX API is Longhorn and beyond only. Indigo will, however, be supported downlevel. |
