Paul Thurott, author of WinSuperSite.com had some not-too-nice things to say about Apple's Mac OS X in a recent Longhorn FAQ. Perhaps I'm reading too much into Paul's statements, but it sounds to me like he's dismissing the entire Mac OS as inferior to Longhorn because of one thing: Longhorn's task-based interface. When I read, "Today, Windows XP and its task-based interface are far superior to anything in Mac OS X", I hear, "Windows XP in its entirety and particularly its task-based interface are far superior to anything in Mac OS X in its entirety. When I read, "Longhorn is far more impressive technically than Panther" it sounds to me like he's saying that Longhorn in total is superior than Panther in total. If I'm misreading that then you can stop reading here.
