Thanks Adrian. Microsoft has admitted it regrets the comments made by one of its security chiefs who blamed "laid back" system administrators for making IIS web server software look more vulnerable than it really is. In a silicon.com exclusive last Friday, Ian Hellen, principal security consultant at Microsoft UK, said the company's much-maligned IIS web server software would have less security problems if system administrators took more care to update patches. | ||

I guess it's good business politics but I'd sure rather see the truth spoken than anything else.
Laid-back admins are a huge reason we encounter so many security issues that snowball into crisis rather than being simple things to just patch and move on. |

Microsoft.com has been hacked FYI. Nothing serious, but there have been holes left open by even Microsoft's admins.
Microsoft is very good though about learning from it's mistakes. They're getting MUCH better to say the least. |

| Microsoft.com was down due to its DNS servers being flooded. Basically a Denial of service attack that all servers are "vulnerable" to. They were all on one subnet and therefore vulnerable. That was poor planning on Microsoft's part not due to their software. I am glad that MS has verbalized the problem, and will pay more attention to security in the future. How can this be considered a bad thing? |

Heh. I'm sitting here at the SANS conference as I read this...
During the keynote address on monday it was pointed out that all vendors have security problems. Microsoft's only look like a bigger problem because they are everywhere. This was Alan Paller, whom I guess I am going to trust more than a bunch of Linux kiddies. But there is a problem, and it needs to be addressed. The problem is making the job easier for the admins to keep up with and install these patches. Calling them lazy isn't quite accurate, because it can be hard work. |
