CDRLabs has posted their review of Lite-On's first recordable DVD drive, the 4x LDW-401S. Here's a snippet:
While Lite-On took a little longer than many expected to ship their first DVD+R/RW drive, it was definitely worth the wait. The LDW-401S is one of the best DVD writers we've tested. For the price, it's hard to beat the performance and features Lite-On's new drive offers.
With drives offering 8x writing speeds starting to hit store shelves, the LDW-401S isn't the fastest DVD writer around. However, its 4x DVD+R and DVD+RW writing speeds should more than satisfy the needs of most. As it is, the drive performed very well in our tests, turning out some of the fastest DVD+RW writing times we've seen.
The LDW-401S also did surprisingly well in our DVD read tests. While most of the DVD writers we've tested have had no problems reading single layer, data DVD's at 12x, they usually slowed to a crawl when reading other types of media. That wasn't the case with Lite-On's new drive. The LDW-401S was able to read single layer DVD movies at 12x, dual layer discs at 8x and DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media at a respectable 6x.
